Can't uninstall One Drive

I mentioned this in another thread, but on clean install of 23H2 I can't seem to uninstall One Drive. Until recently, I just used to uninstall it in programs in control panel. But it wasn't there. So I went to the menu and clicked uninstall and that just took me to the list of apps - and it wasn't there to uninstall.

So I used this from Winaero

Terminal (Admin)

winget uninstall onedrive

I thought that had done it as it's no longer on the task bar. But it's still in the list of installed programs with an uninstall option! And it's still showing on the start menu as a "frequently used app" (not true!).

Hi, Hazel.

@glasskuter would be the one to watch, she has had to post the steps so many times, that I believe that she has nailed the process.

There is a right way and a wrong way.

How do I get rid of OneDrive permanently?

I'm sick of all of the duplication of my files. How do I get rid of One Drive? I don't use the Cloud. I'm not a computer person, end user only. Could I get step by step instructions. Thank you. If this is posted in the wrong place, please feel free to move it. TIA

If you’ve already followed those steps correctly, I believe at one point I may have used Revo Free to remove Onedrive. But I’ve also followed this and not had a problem.

But you need to follow glasskuters steps properly before removing OneDrive.

Thanks I'll check that out. It hasn't gone - it's back on my task bar. There is nothing in my one drive (already checked). I have never had this issue before! I've usually just uninstalled it in control panel/programs. I had a quick look at that tutorial and went to disable it in task manager - but the option to disable wasn't there. Just "end task".

The problem was - it was not in the list of apps to uninstall it! I tried that winget command which seemed to work but then it came back again.

Click End Task then disable OneDrive from the (Task Manager) Startup list, if you can find it in there..

Something has obviously been left behind. You could also check;

Right-click Taskbar > Taskbar settings
Scroll to Other system tray icons (or Notification area > Select which icons appear on the taskbar)
Toggle OneDrive OFF if it's listed

One more thing to look at

Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter
Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

Look for a folder named OneDrive and delete it (if it exists)

Also check here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look for an entry related to OneDrive and delete it if found

Thanks - yes I needed to click on start up apps to disable it - it is showing twice or three times? See screenshot below. Only the folder would let me right click and disable. Also did the taskbar settings thing you mentioned and turned it off there (I didn't know about that).

So Revo or registry? Or both? I have revo installed.

Check the registry entries I listed, also. The duplication of OneDrive in the Startup section is a new one to me.

You could do it in any order you like. If Revo doesn’t remove the registry entries, try then going to the registry manually and seek & destroy any OneDrive entries.

Check those registry entries, regardless. Remove OneDrive entries as mentioned.

When you do a clean install, next time I’d follow those steps from @glasskuter before resorting to winget or winaero. There should be no need for magic tricks outside of Brinks tutorials.

Oops - I was looking on the wrong computer there

I'm typing on this one and checking settings on the other one. And yes it's still there in start up apps and disabled. I had no issues with my main computer (the one I'm typing on), I uninstalled it in control panel yonks ago and not a sign of it.

So need to check the registry on the right computer now ...........
