This tutorial will show you how to change the default system font for all users in Windows10 and Windows 11.

A font is a graphical representation of text that may include a different typeface, point size, weight, color, or design.

Windows 11 uses the Segoe UI font as the default system font. This font is used for icons, menus, title bar text, File Explorer, and more.

You must be signed in as an administrator to change the default system font.

Changing the default system font will not affect Microsoft Store apps and modern UI items like Settings and Start menu.

Option One

Change Default System Font

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .reg file below.

Change_default_system_font.reg

2 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3 Unblock the .reg file.

4 Right click or press and hold on the .reg file, and click/tap on Edit to open it in Notepad.

5 In Notepad, replace ENTER FONT NAME HERE at the bottom with the name of the font (ex: "Arial Bold") you want to have as the default system font. (see screenshots below)

To see available fonts and their names:

A) Open the C:\Windows\Font folder.

B) You can click/tap on a font family (ex: "Arial") to open it and see the individual font names (ex: "Arial Bold") in the family.

7 Double click/tap on the modified Change_default_system_font.reg file to merge it.

8 When prompted, click/tap on Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

9 Restart the computer to apply.

Option Two

Restore Default System Font

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below.

2 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3 If you have Smart App Control turned on, you will need to unblock the downloaded REG file.

4 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

5 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

The ethernet adapter integrated into the motherboard died. I am now using a TPLink TX201 ethernet adapter in a PCIe expansion slot for Internet connectivity.
I tried going back to default for my windows 10 pro and I am getting an error "The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor." I originally use this to change the font to go back to Calibri, but now I am getting a bunch of strange symbols when I try to right click/copy and my : is gone from my system clock. I would like to just undo what I did. Thanks

Windows 11 fonts are very thin, especially the fonts used in File Explorer appear too thin and lack visual weight. Making them difficult to read comfortably, especially for users who experience eye fatigue or age related vision sensitivity. I tried your script but it doesn't work in File Explorer 🙏

Hello, :alien:

I just tested on my system, but it still works in File Explorer for me.

Just to confirm, did you modify the REG file to use the font name you wanted like at step 5 in option 1, and restarted the computer after merging the REG file to apply?

Hello, :alien:

I just tested on my system, but it still works in File Explorer for me.

Just to confirm, did you modify the REG file to use the font name you wanted like at step 5 in option 1, and restarted the computer after merging the REG file to apply?
yes, i changed it to Tahoma. Doesn't work in File Explorer

But why is font "Segoe UI Variable" not still the default font?

Still confused. Several placed on the intraweb  , e.g. here, state the default Windows 10 system font is "Segoe UI" and that for Windows 11 is "Segoe UI Variable". Your text files in this tutorial are showing "Segoe UI". Like I said, I'm confused. o_O

I changed the font used by "Segoe UI Variable (TrueType)" by default to "Arial Bold" to see what may be using it, but I didn't notice any font changes in W11.

The fonts changed by this tutorial do not include the fonts used by the modern UI since it often breaks the modern UI.

Hey Brink,
Just wanted to say thank you so much for all of the support your provide in this forum. Anytime the Windows support staff isn't able to help me, I come here and undoubtedly find a resolution to the hiccup I'm having.

Anyways, using your instructions, I was able to change my font to a new one I installed (also your instructions), however I've got a few problems / questions I'm hoping you can help me with. I really like this font, I just need it to be a bit darker than it is. (I'll attach pictures below so help explain my questions as well.)
- The font (Blissful) doesn't come in light, bold, etc. It just comes in regular, which is super light. In the registry editor, I was able to choose the bold option, which provided perfect readability, however I can't do that on Firefox or anywhere in the OS, so the font is still super light on many websites etc. I was wondering if there was anyway to change either the weight of the font, or do something else so that it appears the way it does in registry editor. I know this might not be possible since the font is only available in regular, but I figured I'd ask.
- Some window programs such as Outlook, and even in firefox, has a different font from the one I chose, which is ridiculously bold and ugly haha. I'm wondering if there's a way to change this at all since there isn't a corresponding bold font for Blissful. I'm wondering if there might be something in Font Substitutes, but I'm not about to go messing around within knowing what I'm doing haha.

Any help you can provide would be most appreciated :) Thank you in advance!

Here's an example of what the font now looks like in registry editor.

Hello @ALC, and welcome to the forum. :alien:

Some apps and browser/sites may use their own font settings. You can check their settings to if there may be one to change it for them.

Firefox:

Outlook:
Hey Brink,
Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly!

So I did change the font in Firefox, however, since there isn't a bold option, it's still very light. I wasn't sure if there was anything else I could do to adjust this on the back end of things.
As for Outlook, apologies if I didn't explain myself well. I know how to change the default font for my emails in Outlook, however, the interface of the actual program itself, not within the email creation, is where the big blocky bold font is, and that's what I'm trying to change.

Is there anyway to know what font Windows is substituting where there is bold font, and then be able to change that within font substitutes?

Thank you so much for your help, and apologies for all of the questions, this is new to me.
