Solved Checking For Dell Driver Updates.

Unfortunately, 2 of our Dell PC's had Dell Supportassist OS Remediation updates applied and we had stability problems afterwards. Dell has acknowledged the issue. The workaround is to uninstall Dell Remediation and Supportassist which has worked.

I don't particularly want to reinstall SA or Remediation so I'm considering just checking for and downloading any driver updates from the Dell website

Do any Dell users know if its safe to download updates as soon as they appear on the Dell website or should they be delayed for a period of time to see if they are good? On one occasion a BIOS Update which I installed from the website was pulled a few days later after reports that ir was causing problems. Thanks

They're generally safe. I can't think of the last time we had an issue, but it probably has happened. We set Dell Command | Update to delay for three days, to give Dell a chance to pull the updates. :)

Thanks for the reply. We use(d) Dell Update not Command to check however it keeps auto installing the plug in which we are advised to uninstall - there is no settings configuration with Dell Update only Command, so we had to uninstall Dell Update as well.

Dell supply their drivers, including bios updates, to Microsoft for delivery through Windows Update. I wait for Windows Update to deliver mine.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Dell has occasionally uploaded incorrect, unstable, or incompatible drivers to their Dell Drivers & Downloads site. Dell typically pulls the flawed driver and replaces it with a stable version a few days later. I've gone for drivers there that wouldn't even download or that wouldn't install but it's a rare occurrence and if you keep checking back a corrected couple will get posted. I still prefer using it though since they match my PC ID for downloading and it isn't the resource hog that their software is which I choose to just keep disabled in Windows Services. I leave it installed due to Alienware Command Center being needed and certain Dell services are sometimes needed to interact with it.

Thanks very much. Would Windows Update be reliable enough to install a Dell BIOS update? I've always installed them directly from Dell using either Dell Update or the webpage. I would imagine if I left a new driver update (not that there are that many now) for a week before downloading from the website that would be OK? I noticed that Supportassist takes some time between the update being released and showing on SA. Thanks again.

@Mitch FWIW I rely soly on Dell Command Update for my drivers but I run it manually. To keep Dell frron automatically running, I disable both the Dell Client Management Service and Dell Tech Hub Service. When I get ready to run it I enable those services, do my thing, then disable them again.

Thanks @glasskuter . If I reinstall Dell Update I'll give that a try. There is only the very occasional Update now as Dell I think have stopped updating them. The only updates are for Remediation and the plugin.

It's the same package, wherever it comes from. Dell provide it to Microsoft, who offer it as an optional update.

My System Five, a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, has been reliably getting all its BIOS updates through Windows Update since I bought it three years ago.

I have had a couple BIOS updates get downloaded and installed by Windows when WU posted it first before it hit the Dell Support Site. I've never had an issue going either way and always gotten the correct BIOS version. My 15th month old machine tends get a lot so I've done several now.

Thanks very much everyone for your advice. This gives me several options. I don't think I'm going to reinstall Dell Supportassist. Is Dell Remediation required? I use Macrium Reflect 8 and X with bootable usb rescue media. I've never needed Remediation and I've heard it's a bit of a resource hog. Thanks.

Yes, WU has gotten much better at handling driver updates and yes, Dell does upload their drivers to WU, but I do not include drivers/bios with WU for the simple reason I want to know exactly what and when they are changed. This is especially true of bios and tpm firmware and graphics drivers. There are just some things my old school syndrome wants control of.

Instead of that, you can go to
www.dell.com/support/home/?app=drivers
then enter your computer's Dell service tag to see a list of all the drivers & driver updates and Bios versions for your specific computer hardware [as it was when it left the factory].
That's all I've ever done.
