CHKDSK hangs

I've had trouble backing up to my external F: drive (an 8TB SSD) the last couple of days so I tried to run CHKDSK on it, but it hangs at 99% of stage 4 (screen grab below). This has happened twice. What might be causing this, and what should I do? Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this (seemed like the closest).

If CHKDSK /r is hanging, it may be finding bad sectors that are not in the data area. I'd check the SMART data for the drive and consider replacement if you see errors there.

Drive looks fine from here. The /R on CHKDSK checks every sector, so it does consume a lot of time on a large drive. With the SATA interface, even an SSD is going to take some time on an 8TB drive. The SMART doesn't indicate anything that was detected. It is also highly dependent on the actual interface. You're talking about an external drive, what's the exact model as the only 8TB Samsung 870 QVO SATA SSD I find is an internal SATA drive.

Well, an 8TB drive on USB 3.1 will take probably quite a while to access every sector on the drive.
