Chocolatey - What to do for already installed apps?

I know the basics about computing, if you can bare that in mind when replying :-)

I've recently come across Chocolatey.

I've installed Chocolatey but not used it yet as I've been trying to find out what to do for already installed apps.

Could someone explain please. Thanks

What to do with installed apps depends a lot on what wants to be done. Do you want to get rid of the apps/uninstall them?

Looking at Chocolatey's Website suggests it's more than what a consumer will need on their computer.

Chocolatey manages its own database, to keep track of what's been installed by Chocolatey. Any apps that existed before Chocolatey are unknown to it.

The usual suggestion is to uninstall the previous apps, using whatever normal way they're uninstalled. Then reinstall the missing apps from Chocolatey. In the future you can use Chocolatey to upgrade or uninstall them.

Otherwise there is no "import" method for Chocolatey to scan for existing apps. It was written primarily to help groups who do a lot of new PC installs.

So UniGetGUI is better since it updates existing apps. For common free applications also see www.ninite.com You check the applications you want and download an installer that updates or installs these. If you run the same file after some days it updates the same applications without having to visit www.ninite.com again, unless you want to change your choice.

Uninstall Chocolatey and try UniGetGUI which will install Chocolatey itself? Will UniGetGUI detect what applications I already have installed?

That said there are a few applications such as Microsoft Edge that UniGetGUI fails to update. No big deal, just update these manually. You can add them in the ignore list.

Just read that I can use Chocolatey to install UniGetGUI, so I might as well keep it on my system?

Would www.ninite.com be easier to use than UniGetGUI?
I used Linux Mint for a while a few years ago and used their Update Manager. Is UniGetGUI similar to that?

I've installed UniGetUI. I like it.
Installed the latest version of Ditto. So much easier.

one question: I forgot to use Chocolatey to install UniGetUI.
I used Terminal to install UniGetUI. Will I now have two installs of Chocolatey as I read that UniGetUI installs Chocolatey itself?

Most likely it detected Chocolatey was already installed and ignored it or updated to last version.
