Christmas trifle

My Nan made trifle w/o jelly instead used crystallised fruit like watermelon, fig, ginger etc (I'm from English/Dutch heritage)

But just wondering - if it was a colonial thing that happened? - I obviously do not use jelly in my trifle.

I had to look that up. I've never had or even heard of a trifle. ^^
Scot and German (grandparents, both sides, came from Europe, circa1900)

Always had strawberry jelly, custard , jerez (sherry - lots of), dream topping, loads of berries (no candy peel) and, of course, hundreds and thousands.

Yep that's ole English.. was just wondering where our recipe came from -- we use Old Brown Sherry soaked Cashews etc - anyway better than the standard stuff..

I would eat the cashews long before they got into the trifle. Regrettably trifles are a rare event for me now as a diabetic.

Diabetic jelly is fine but I have yet to find a decent diabetic custard :-(.

We only have trifle at Christmas (remember it's summer here so Christmas pud and warm custard is not really a thing) - it was a bit decadent in the old days and it's become a family tradition to only have it at Christmas. Also there are Glace cherries on top of the cream - so diabetic hell.
