Outlook: First phase of PST support in new Outlook for Windows
The first phase PST (a.k.a. Outlook Data File) support in the new Outlook for Windows provides read-only access to Mail items within *.pst files. Users will be able to open *.pst files, read their emails within *.pst files, and search *.pst files for emails. All Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks data saved in the *.pst files are still there, but they cannot be accessed in this preview. Next releases will expand PST support capabilities.

I checked the notifications in my M365 Business subscription and MS have much more information and proposed time frames. See the screen capture. For business and enterprise at least they're planning a full implementation of .pst files and functionality.

I agree, MS and their proposed timings for intro of new features etc. aren't usually very accurate.

So rather than continue developing something that's pretty much tested, trusted and bug free they're going to start afresh. I wonder how long it would take for the new code to resemble the original.

they want everything migrated to apps. good luck with that (to them). i foresee 3rd party software skyrocketing in sales within 5-7 years.

If everything eventually gets migrated to web based app's and cloud storage we'll no longer need multi-terabytes of storage, we could dig out that old 50MB SCSI drive from our ATARI or BBC Micro days and still have loads of free space.

I keep all my data and photos in cloud OneDrive but I still mirror all data in real-time locally. There's no local space saving here.

Good thing I kept my SCSI Zip drive. I probably shouldn’t have used the disks for target practice though.

Does this mean that there isn't really difference between the two retail versions of Office 2024? I think the "Business" version includes Outlook. If that is "Outlook Classic" than it doesn't matter. Outlook "New" is free, correct?

I've got M365 Business. Outlook has the classic version with a toggle to change to 'New Outlook'. It took me a little while to adapt but I use 'New Outlook' which I now prefer.

It is in the Registry on my desktop PC at Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences - UseNewOutlook (REG_DWORD) set to 1

actually 1 method i use to store sensitive data lmao. mostly because very VERY few people actually have the drive to read them... and its offline

One of the annoying things with MS is they have so many versions/builds/channels of Microsoft 365\Office\Windows it gets rather confusing which features work and which don't.
