Solved Cloudfront virus?

This isn't about Windows but it is about device scams. I play a lot of games on my Kindle. Recently, last 2 days, a window pops up when saying my device has been infected with 3 viruses. I looked at the line containing a bunch of code -- I guess -- and in it it calls out Cloudfront. I googled it and supposedly it is using cloudfront for the creeps to steal stuff or mess up your system. In big red letters it says: Proceed -- to presumably get rid of the 3 viruses. I did not proceed - I think it is a bit of malware. I have chosen to ignore it but would like to get rid of it. I think it is an Amazon bit that normally is ok but the creeps have taken over part of it. Any thoughts.? Ever see this? Thanks.

Hi, Patsy.

I don’t think it’s a virus per say, just adware trying to encourage you to compromise yourself.

Some things to attend to and try:

1. Clear Browser Data
• Go to Settings on your Kindle Fire
• Select Apps & Notifications (or Manage Applications on older versions)
• Tap See All Apps
• Find and select your browser (typically Silk Browser)
• Tap Storage & Cache, then select Clear Cache and Clear Data

2. Scan for Unwanted Apps
• Return to Settings and go to Apps & Notifications > See All Apps
• Review installed apps for anything suspicious or unfamiliar
• If found, tap the app and select Uninstall

3. Perform a System Update
• Go to Settings > Device Options > System Updates
• Tap Check Now and install any available updates

4. Factory Reset (if issues persist)
• Go to Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults
• Confirm the reset—this will erase all data and restore original settings
• After reset, reconfigure your Kindle and choose apps you install, and read the install questions, carefully. Some apps come bundled with this crap.

Oh thank you Ants! I didn't think it was either but did want to get rid of it! So annoying. I will do as instructed on my Kindle. Sweet little Kindle. Never hurt nobody... :lmao:

It's malvertising. I saw this once and then couldn't trust my 22H2 installation anymore, back in February, 2024.
On desktop, I consider the system compromised, as soon as such browser window opens up. There was a malvertisement circulating around with fake message claiming "5 viruses". I received the malvertising, because I turned off the content filtering that made me get accused of using an ad blocker.

After that, I wiped the SSD, installed 23H2 and changed the passwords. I was lucky that my UEFI-BIOS didn't get hacked!

As soon as I see that kind of stuff, I treat it as a password-theft-cyber-attack. Especially on Windows, I treat it as a drive-by-malware-installation.

That was why I said goodbye to my September 20, 2022 11 22H2 installation.

Then this year, I had other issues, but it wasn't malware-related, so I wiped the SSD and installed 24H2 on June 10, 2025.

If it's in someone else's computer who does not make images, I'll do my regular cleanup (cache, cookies, history, adwarecleaner, Malwarebytes, HitmanPro) the first time I see it. If the user sees it a second time, it's a clean install.

If I saw one on my own machine, it's automatically an image recovery for me. I'll first go back a couple of images prior. If I then saw it a second time, it would be recovery of an image I made after my last clean install with all applications when I knew for sure nothing was lurking in my machine.

I make 2 images with every clean install. The first a bare naked virgin Windows with nothing but drivers, a second after my tweaks and applications. Along with my regular images, I keep those 2 images until the next time I do a clean install when I start all over again. I used to clean install once a year, but since windows 11, it's more like 2 years. Since I was forced to do it with 24h2, hopefully 25h2 will give me a pass this year.

Keep in mind when you see these notifications in the windows system notification area, the computer is almost never compromised. You can tell if its coming from your browser, and if it is, you just need to simply go into site settings and disable notifications for websites.

I think wiping and redoing the whole computer from a browser notification is a little overkill, but that's just me. I know you guys understand it but if you still feel that way that's up to you. But I think it's a bit overkill. They are only going to get more frequent, so I would just disable web browser notifications completely.

It's better to use certain extensions which block things like this.

It was the browser. It was never in Windows notifications. It was opened in my browser. It was a cyber-attacker controlled domain.

ah guess I misread. Massively apparently. I went back and read it again. whoops. That makes sense then. Yeah if it randomly opened a tab like that to it that's possibly a bit more dodgy. I have seen ads and misredirects like that from ads a few times.

I never disable the extensions for that reason, seen enough people burned too many times.

I use windows sandbox whenever I am landing around unusual websites, or my phone.

Did step 1 -- played a game which is when it usually pops up and nothing did. Think all is well. If not, I'll try #2. Thank you.!!

One last comment about my Kindle issue. Amazing how many smart people on this site did not notice my comment "this is about a kindle NOT Windows." At least a couple of snarky comments about the whole silly thing. Hmmm.
