OS
Windows 11 Pro
Started building computers back in early 90s in order to optimize puters for AutoCAD. Back then needed to have a boot menu in DOS / W4WGs which had like 6 choices, most common ones were .... I'm wanna use in AutoCAD, .... I'm wanna use office apps ... I wanna game ... I'm doing beta testing for work for Memory Management Tools to Run AutoCAD. Switched over to NT after that and had my 1st "Boy am I glad I tweaked Windows" moment. I turned off automatic updates;Id wait a week or so after an update, then if there wasn't an explosion of problems, I'd install the update(s). In one case, our corporate office who had an-on call IT Management firm who required AU to be left on, had their whole CAD department shut down because the update broke AutoDesk licensing Servies abd the CAD peeps were sitting around twiddling their thumbs for a few days till a fix was released. In short I can't remember avoiding an update on "principal" but I can remember 7or 8 times when not installing an update on release day. I left that firm and started my own business because I was tired of working 14 outta 14days every 2 weeks, getting hom never 10 and never seeing my kidswhen they were awake.

In those years I was building CAD optimized PCs for myself and others which had a side benefit of being excellent gaming boxes. Large monitors, fast SSCI HDs, hi end CPUs and GFX cards were paid for by the buisnessand they made great hand me downs for the kids as they got into gaming. Soon everything was OC'd and it was worth the T & E to tweak the OS and doftware elominarting bloat. Before the kids hit double digits in age, they were "helping me" do the builds which wa sgteat as they were coming into the era of "Mom and Dad know nothing and the kids on the bus know everything"... except for building PCs. With three kids, we had neighbors, friends, family, work colleagues in my workshop (or what my wife referred to as the "dining room table" over almost every other weekend. We sat with themon component selection, watched over their shoulder as they builtit, helping only when asked, installed the OS,turned off AU, and tweaked / removed perowner request.

As time went on, AutoCADwas no longer the reason to buiuld high end stuff. I still get requests to do builds with 32 cores and expensive Quaddro GFX cards, and frankly folks give me that "dog w/the tilted head" look as they can not comprehend the fact that AutoCAD basically uses just 1 core with rare exceptions and being vector graphic drives, the Quadros (which excel in raster GFX, get smoked by gaming cards.

That's long winded intro that just explains why I am typing from my last CAD / Gaming Box Win 7 Pro build which I built in November 2013. It does everything I want, and w/no time for gaming, I have no reason to upgrade; it's also a lot faster in AutoCAD than my 2 year old corporate laptop and, unlike the laptop, it never crashes. This box is a dual pump WC system w/ water blocks on eveything and was built as much for fun, and the challenge of seeing how far it could be OC'd. With the kids, continued to build for friends and colleages but preyty much all the kids have done a few Win 10 builds using Rufus but my involvment ended on bootup. Once it 'left the bulding" it was their issue.

Fast forward till today, I been pretty much outta the game for 5 years ... still do hardware builds, no OS work. But can't take the WC box with when out and about and need a back up as that thing has been running 24/7 ful tilt foir12 years. So now I have a couple of custom built lappies coming, will be doing the OS installs and tweaking. Waited until I coult get overclockable Ultra 9-275HX w/ 5070s and 2 x 16 GB 5600, Samdung Pros in the < $2k category amd <$2400 for 5070Tis I want to be notified about updates but delay the installs. Oddly, on my corporate laptopfora firm I comsult for, there was no Windows Calculator and installing it was blocked. I feel like theDeNiro character in "The Intern" coming out of retirement and finding a whole new world of tools available.

Again, want to be able to pause updates, eliminate bloat for things I will never use wherever possile ... No Outlook, No Browser .... I saw a screenshot of one (Winhance ?) that lets you install / uninstall about 60 Windows apps many of which I don't even know what they do. I saw a bunch of posts on the topic but each had a message saying the post was old and recommending to start a new topic.

Life is hectic these days, no time of late to keep uplike I used to. I don't want to do an unattended install as want to go thru the process to familiarize myself with what's involved so that I can help the folks whose systems we built back then are reaching the end of their useful lives and are starting to come back

I just don’t, sorry. Use REVO to remove any Microsoft Apps you don’t want.

Not touching the rest.

Cheers.

P.S.

My opinion is that very few are going to read your rant. (In my opinion) It’s best to post a thread about individual issues rather than just dump everything in a single thread. Adding a life story is nice but just clutters the issue. You can post about yourself in the “Chillout Room” and there’s even a post a picture of yourself thread

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?

I recommend uninstalling COPILOT and any unnecessary AI. In addition Spybot Anti-Beacon helps block or cut down unnecessary background telemetry using resources. O&O ShutUp10++ is also helpful in same or similar regard for privacy,, telemetry, etc. (I USE BOTH)

I noticed such a positive difference,, that I've installed them on all Windows 11 Pro installs. (over a dozen)
Links below, good luck. (y)

Oh, and I un-installed OneDrive and other unnecessary programs. Performance after 24H2 update is quite decent.
And no, I never use a Microsoft Account.

Have installed Spybot and Shut Up on builds at owners request ... never had to opportunity to use those machines over time once they "left the building". with them.

Hadn't thought about this in a while ...but back in the day of "Concept Viruses",we did design work for the feds and were not allowed to use any MS Applications other than W4WGs and later NT.

And for all these years, I thought that Windows for Workgroups and NT were operating systems, not apps. Thanks for enlightening me. ;-)

(Double check: that was a joke. Maybe not a good one.)

Some of us install 11 with all the MS stuff. Using a Microsoft account. I've uninstalled OneDrive and a few other things I don't use, but without a major attempt at de-bloating.

And yet, I find 11 (24H2) to be pretty reliable. Haven't seen many BSODs.

Nowadays, any custom operating system (except Arch) has pre-installed programs.
For example iOS.
I don't understand why only Windows is criticized.

I've never used Windows “out of the box” though. Maybe there are some annoying ads.

Update.
But Windows 12 may become free, but then it will be impossible to delete anything.

Putting aside the OP's unnecessary life and job history, there is an important issue, if only implied.

If you are starting from scratch, zero knowledge, then what is the fastest/simplest way to really tune up your Win 11 install. I'm going to guess that anyone with this question should start with a few, selected multi-tweak program. say like Explorer/Pathcher, Winaero or Chris Titus' marvelous utility. Which ones, and in what order? Can you be sure that these programs don't "step" on each others' tweaks? And then there are commercial programs from Stardock and others. And then there are a whole ton of individual tweaks from our own Win 11 Tweaks - Leader Board Same questions.

I'm to assume that all these programs save their settings so that if you need to do a second Win 11 install, or just wipe your your install and start all over clean, you can repeat using these programs with the settngs you saved?

Asking humbly and not seeking any recognition:  Could responses to this post become its own thread, maybe even a stickie?

one of the best debloat tools for Windows that you can use is RevoUninstaller
i have found it to be essential in removing from the system programs you don't require
and does a very good job of cleaning up afterwards. i purchased the pro version
which for me to buy any software is unusual as i normally go the open source route.

best of luck with your endeavours, Steve ..

RevoUninstaller is a MUST-HAVE.

The portable version is SO HANDY. Throw it on a USB and keep it handy. Absolutely agree with you on this one @XxXxX ,I first heard about it from JayzTwoCents on YouTube. This is a killer cool tool. (y)

And for all these years, I thought that Windows for Workgroups and NT were operating systems, not apps. Thanks for enlightening me. ;-)
Really, ??? That your conclusion ? The subject is utilities that aid the system builder in the installation and/ management of OS's. And all these years I found these forums filled with folks eager to help ... call me enlightened. All kidding aside, this was just one way we've found to give back to the community and asking this community to participate.

Looks like will be doing the installs Saturday. As has been described, have had issues in past where Automatic Updates broke something. Now on this old Win 7 box, I see the list, install any thing security related and then install 1 at a time ... seeing if they have any negative affects and if so uninstalling them. Have 3 or 4 old ones that are still sitting there as they caused issues back as far as 2015 and 2016

1. Driver updates - I prefer being notified and then installing direct from manufacturer; but I'd always delay a few days to make sure no issues reported.

2. Others - I just let them sit until have had a chance to check them out but a) Not getting many new ones other than Malicious Tool and Virus b) last one I installed /uninstalled was 2021. As I noted, the one that my arse was really saved was when an update disabled AutoCAD licensing service. When I look for published "known issues" say for 24 H2, I see that most are associated w/ hardware or software I don't use. I see for example that 242H2 had an issue with "AutoCAD 2022 might not Open After Updating to Windows 11, Version 24H2" but it would seem that WU has a Compatibility check where it won't install that update if you have AutoCAD. Not sure what happens when installing the OS and letting it do updates, you then try and install it. Others relate to games (i.e Assassins Creed) but since I don't have ... I don't have any sense of how well this compatibility check works at this point, so I'm likely being overly concerned.

3. I am really liking the "look"of Winhance ... got 2 days to figure it out :) . I also like that it eases the install of accessory apps (i.e. browsers, utilities, NotePad++, compression tools. etc

My personal recommendation is Chris Titus's WinUtil. His community has been very active on it, and he oversees most of the changes that are done. I've watch several of his Twitch vids where he's actively working on it. It does app installs via Chocolaty and debloats/tweaks via Powershell scripting. You can also for $5 buy access to a version that you don't need the web for, if you want to contribute to his work.

As always, I would HIGHLY recommend you make sure that any changes that are offered, not just here but anywhere, are ones you want to make and always have a backup in case it doesn't go as planned.

I already have Chris Titus app on an SSD along with Winhance. It's the 1st app recommended here:

The video is by the guy who created Winhance

Yes, as an engineer by profession,I'm kinda anal about having multiple backups readily available. This box has an OS drive and a mirror of it, so if anything goes boinky, I can always just go into BIOS and switch the boot SSD.
