Solved Confused - what's the latest STANDARD W11 Pro release

Hi folks
What's the latest bog standard W11 pro release currently -- NON insider etc - just want a standard version for running things compared to various insider versions I also have.

There are so many different builds etc -- I'm 100% confused as to what they all do and what the purpose is of all these different builds.

This is a basic build I installed via the MCT from Ms -- the only software added so far is just a language pack. Is this build the latest Non Insider build that can just be updated via WU etc. - I don't mind testing insider stuff but I also want a STANDARD W11 for comparison / reference etc.

I'd be just as interested in simply knowing what the "standard" is for Windows 11 in general. So many have stayed on 24H2 and even 23H2 I'm of a mind that running 25H2 might be considered risky... maybe like being on the Canary channel is to a Windows Insider.

But, further complicating things are which edition it is. There is Win11 Pro (like I have) or Pro for Workstation or Win11 Home or Win 11 Enterprise or Win 11 Education or Win 11 Pro Education and those region-specific editions (to comply with the DMA law in the EU, for instance). They may follow the same versioning, but they each have their peculiar code enablement and therefore their own opportunities for bugs to screw things up.

After the latest update I'm on Win11 PRO, 26200.7705.

Always being on the latest mandatory feature update might be the "standard". But it's also riskiest (aside from being on Insider builds) since you get to experience the problems when MS screws the pooch on QC before releasing them (like they did with KB5074109 and build 26200.7623). In my lay opinion, a "standard" shouldn't do that.

In one sense (of the common-sense variety) the "standard" should be "the latest, most stable currently" and "most likely to remain stable going forward" in that no feature changes to inject new bugs are planned. That would currently be 23H2, version 22631.3880, for any edition. As I understand it, that's it's last build (version) and is still supported with security updates and bug fixes. But there are no feature updates forthcoming and so is "stable" in that regard at least. IMO, this would be what you install on your mother's computer so she can play her games, shop Amazon and sell her knitting on eBay without worrying about it crashing after another buggy feature update that you have to drive 100 miles to fix for her.

I consider whatever is on the main Windows 11 download page to be standard which is 25H2

Your 25H2 26200.7623 has the January 13 mandatory Patch Tuesday CU for the General Availability Channel (aka RTM). I would regard the Monthly PT updates as the 'standard build'.

KB5074109 Windows 11 Cumulative Update build 26100.7623 (24H2) and 26200.7623 (25H2) - Jan. 13

While there have been three CUs since then, two out-of-band and one Preview of the non-security updates due next Patch Tuesday, these were all optional updates. Whether you install or not is up to you, in any case these will all become part of the next Patch Tuesday CU (and hence 'standard') in a week's time on February 10.

Option One
Download Latest Windows 11 64-bit ISO using Media Creation Tool (MCT)

This will be for a Windows 11 Version 25H2 build 26200.7623 ISO file with install.esd.

Brink updates this when Microsoft compiles a new ISO
Media Creation Tool is always ahead of a direct download when it comes to ISO builds.
When using MCT (Media Creation Tool), you don’t need to create the install USB, you can simply tell it to download the ISO only.

Curiously, when still on 26200.7623 I kept trying to update to KB5078127 but it kept failing each time I tried. It appeared as "optional" in my Windows Update, but I understood it to be a "fix" for the buggy mandatory update (KB5074109) that came previously and wanted it to avert any potential for problems.

I suppose it failed because my installation didn't have certain necessary pre-conditions which would demand it (it was stable). At any rate, the update to 26200.7705 came through and posted cleanly so I guess I'm not at any risk for the moment.

These are really unnecessary worries for someone to have to struggle through. If this is become Microsoft's 'Standard', then I might turn into a hater.

The KB5074105 Preview update is Cumulative, so it includes fixes from the previous out-of-band updates. So no, you're not at risk now.

Bog standard Windows 11 Pro (Retail channel) with the latest WU patches, no insider, plain WIndows.

Now got the "current version" -- everything seems OK . Why does Ms make things unnecessarily complicated for little if any gain !!!! Updated via standard WU with local account.

BTW for Windows Pro etc on clean install set up for school / work and choose domain join to use local (non Ms account). Still works -- no need to have a domain or use those fiddly OOBE bypasses. !!!

What's complicated about it? Windows Update is really quite easy since it gets you to the latest being made available to you based on your edition, current version and region. Whether or not there's anything substantial gained by it is another matter.

Too easy, IMO, since the latest isn't always the "best"... especially because there so often IS nothing apparently gained even for how easy it might be. I guess that's why so many of us turn off that "get updates as soon as they're available" setting and pause updates for the longest time possible hoping to hear of the problems the new "standard" injects first... and wait for fixes if they're needed.

But, there are the apparent gains, and what is not apparent. What's not apparent can be quite substantial and lays important groundwork for updates still to come which will have more apparent gains: read the KB article on any update (like KB5074105) to see some of what's affected.
