    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

Well all the evidence so far suggests their support is as good as ever, and I can confirm that.

No point in going on about purchase versus lease. It is a done deal.

Nobody is forcing you to upgrade.

If you do not want to lease it why bother with threads about VX at all?

I had a sub, used it for a month then actually deleted reflect from my PC. And that was before you described your experience.

Actually unless I missed something it's not that easy. I had to open an Macrium account to get access to the download. When you install it you have the 30 day option you can choose. When I went to install Reflect X on my second desktop I tried to copy the downloaded file to a flash drive to save time by not having to redownload it. It wouldn't copy. I had to sign-in to download it again. Something else new. The keys are automatically assigned to the computer when you activate it.

Computer related services/company’s are all just crap now. The free ones seem to be fine.
And we let this happen. Once, boycotting had an effect. Now they just don’t care. Sub prices absorb the users that leave.

As previously commented, I've made the obvious decision to stay with purchased V8 till it stops working, while also using belt 'n braces Aomei and Hasleo. As another commenter noted: all these programmes work in the background without interfering with current activity.

An earlier observation I did make was that since Macrium stopped being free for home users after v8, other programmes are determinedly poking into that market. Despite some people insisting that Macrium leasing is a done deal (and stop complaining, so there, says a Hall Monitor), Aomei for example, has been quite sharp in offering to ease that irritation. (No, I have no financial interest in Aomei, nor do I think it is superior to Macrium, but it does do a reasonable job).

Currently offering five (5) "family" Pro licences - I think that means all 5 PC's with the same pre-router IP address - with a one time payment, lifetime upgrades and free tech support, US$89.95 for all 5. No guarantee that Aomei will still be here in 2-3 plus years of course, but an offer not too shabby ... and certainly sticking it up the lease model.

You do still have the option to not upgrade to the next build. I upgraded because I wanted too. Version 8 may continue to work for many years. If Macrium 8 does stop working it will probably be because of changes made to Windows. I don't like the idea of Macrium going Subscription but the $50.00 a year is locked in. I always updated to the newest builds when they were released so in time the locked in price could save me money.

I have noticed in the last 25 years, that backup software doesn't have very much time in the limelight.

Whether it can't keep up with Windows, or just gets over-bloated, or starts costing an arm and a leg...
Five or six years seems to be a good run for backup software.


Ofc, I still miss Norton Ghost 2003, the best backup software ever made.

Never would I.
I do however understand the the part bout being backed into a corner. I have to pay an Adobe sub. I have no choice. As I have strong views about licensing requirments, I would never take any other avenue.

I don’t like it, I think it’s poor form. I don’t know how we let it get this far.
I also have a great disliking for “Lifetime Free” software that ends up going sub.

Lifetime free is a gross model that accumulates a user base, creates a dependency then smacks the user upside the head.

It is still available but now known as Veritas System Recovery. I used to have 10 licenses but dropped down to a single license mainly for testing purposes. The recovery media would not play nice on small high DPI screens. For example, I have an HP Spectre x360 laptop with a 15" screen at 4k resolution. The recovery media absolutely hates that resolution. I had a case open about that FOR SEVERAL YEARS. Ironically, I finally gave up and closed the with the intention of dropping maintenance on the one license I had left that I kept for testing. My maintenance expires October 31. About 3 weeks ago I tested the latest build and they did actually improve the recovery media. It's still not perfect, but the menus are readable now. So I renewed my license. At least that is one good thing: Maintenace is about $14 a year. Dirt cheap.
