"Could not unzip extension" error in all four browsers

The strange thing is that Firefox no longer has the fault, after I reinstalled it

Reinstalled Ant Downloader or the extension?

In Chrome, apparently;

In Chrome, navigate to chrome://extensions/
Now drag and drop the extension from your file manager anywhere onto the extensions page in Chrome.
If the extension is a . crx file you will be asked to review the permissions and add the extension.

You can also apparently load an unpacked extension in Chrome by entering Developer mode in extensions;

  1. Navigate to the Extensions page: Open Chrome and go to chrome://extensions.
  2. Enable Developer Mode: Look for a toggle switch labeled "Developer mode" and enable it. This will reveal additional options.
  3. Load Unpacked Extension: Click the "Load unpacked" button.
  4. Select the Extension Folder: Browse your file system and navigate to the folder containing the extension's files.
  5. Confirm and Install: Select the folder and confirm the installation.
  6. Select “Keep It”

antpants, I have already tried both of these procedures, in my opening post... Just seems strange that Firefox is now functioning as it should after a fresh install, but Chrome continues to not want to play

No problem, to be honest, I had to go back and check to see if I had covered those tasks...

Might be time to resort to using Internet Download Manager (IDM) I bought a license, never once had an issue, in who knows how many years.
They have a free 30 day trial.

First, is FFox still installing extensions after finding Chrome would not work?

If FFox is still working, try this uninstall to remove Chrome completely:

1. Go to Settings, Apps, Installed Apps, scroll down to find Chrome, ... Uninstall.
2. Go to this location: C:\Users\YOUNAME\AppData\Local\Google\
3. Go to this location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\ and delete any Chrome folder you find
4. Also check c:\Program Files\Google\ and delete any Chrome folder you find

Reboot, Reinstall Chrome, try again.

As per my recent post... Totally removed Chrome, even removing registry keys, then reinstalled, same results... Here is what I have been trying tonight. As FF is non non-Chromium backend, I tried downloading Opera, same results, Vivaldi, same results. If it is a security issue, why is FF getting through and the others aren't?

Seems like a Chromium engine issue then. But if it was built in, I'd think a lot more people would be experiencing it. There are very few reports of the issue I could find and they were not really the same as yours.

You can't really remove Chromium's core since Edge uses it. But I have no idea if it actually shares code with other Chromium installations. But maybe doing a Repair on Edge would correct something. Couldn't hurt, I suppose, beyond losing some Edge settings.

Problem now solved, and it was all down to a piece of software I don't remember installing... The culprit software was "GiMeSpace RAMFolder" After I removed the software, I was able to load all extensions.

Thank you to everyone who tried to help me resolve the problem.
