Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 14alc7 Windows 11 Home - refurbished by a well known computer sales and service company (not Best ***) ... additional specs not currently available

I recently purchased my first Windows 11 machine. During setup and updates the unimaginable occurred. I was greeted by a screen message reading " preparing bitlocker recovery". I have never used bitlocker: therefore, I have no key. Now there is an endless loop of operations provided for me. I have passed the time for free return to the store. My research has indicated that short of reinstall this machine has been bricked.
Further research has revealed several possible solutions, leaving me with the question, "What method of recovery using a Windows 10 machine would be the best?"

Please provide links to appropriate tutorials or step-wise instructions.
Thanks in advance for helpful replies.

Welcome to ElevenForum.

I wish your visit was under better circumstances. Let's just dispense with any potential wishful thinking and lay this out plain and simple. Apologies for the brutal honesty here, but I don't want you to be misled:

If you do not have any backups and you do not have the BitLocker recovery key and we are talking about the OS drive: You are done. There is no other recovery UNLESS your recovery key has been saved to the cloud (OneDrive) or to your Microsoft account, or saved elsewhere.

Quote from Microsoft (highlights are my own):

"If I lose my recovery information, will the BitLocker-protected data be unrecoverable?

BitLocker is designed to make the encrypted drive unrecoverable without the required authentication. When in recovery mode, the user needs the recovery password or recovery key to unlock the encrypted drive."

One follow-up to my earlier post:

BitLocker should ONLY turn on automatically when you logon to a Microsoft account. This allows it to save the recovery key to your account automatically. Hopefully, by following the above articles you will be able to locate it.

Please do let us know if you were able to find that recovery key.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. You are correct. If one does not have their 48 digit bitlocker key, a full format and reinstall is required. Normally, this key is stored in your Microsoft account when your account is created. You might want to check your Microsoft account. Sign in to your account

If that is not successful, here's how to create installation media from another computer.

1. Download Media Creation Tool https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2171764
2. Attach a blank USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space. Any content on the flash drive will be deleted.
3. Run the tool. You need to be an administrator to run this tool.
4. Accept license. On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, click Next.
5. Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit) for Windows 11.
6. Select which media you want to use: Select USB flash drive. The tool will download and create media that can install Windows 11 on any computer.

Once media is created use this tutorial to clean install Windows. BE SURE in step 11 to delete all partitions on the drive and install windows on unallocated space . Clean Install Windows 11 Tutorial

I have never used bitlocker: therefore, I have no key. Now there is an endless loop of operations provided for me. I have passed the time for free return to the store.

you will lose whatever is currently on the disk if you do this, but unless you have something vital on there, this is probably simplest:

boot the installation media.

go to cmd prompt [Repair Your Computer > Advanced Troubleshooting Options > Command Prompt ] and type:

diskpart
(then press enter)

lis dis
(then press enter)

sel dis 0 ( use whatver number is the locked disk)
(then press enter)

clean
(then press enter)

exi
(then press enter)

still in cmd prompt type:

x:\setup.exe
(then press enter)

apparently some dell machines have a version of it, unknown to the user and here is post about what to do.

And even worse, if the user ever sees a Recovery Key prompt (as they might after a BIOS update or other configuration change, or a motherboard replacement), that prompt doesn't even suggest checking their Microsoft account to find it, leaving them with no idea how to get a Recovery Key they didn't even know they ever needed...this Recovery Key prompt might be the first time the user learns that their drive was encrypted in the first place.

seemingly also happens with lenovo notebooks and windows home edition

Thank all who have replied. My replies to each of you individually follow:

hsehsetdt: Thanks for your reply. I respect your view based upon your experience. However, I plan to explore other options posted here. It will only cost me time. The worst outcome will be no change. (having an oversized paper weight) The best outcome will be that I have gained useful knowledge and a functional computer.
I want to emphasize the point that I have never used encryption of any type on any device I have owned. The information in another reply to this topic about automatic encryption may apply.
I had to use my Microsoft account to enter setup. No other option was available. The setup proceeded in normal fashion. Suddenly during setup and updating the problem reared it"s ugly head.
Prior to posting in this forum I visited the two links you provided. The key revealed was only 6 characters. This looked wrong to me: nevertheless, I attempted to use it. Predictably that key failed to match. That is when I entered the endless loop of options.

glasskuter: I am creating Windows 11 installation media as I reply. The tutorial you kinked is excellent. Thanks for taking the time to locate it.

SIW2: Thanks for the for the CMD script. I may use it. Time will tell. I plan to begin with the GUI option. The link to the encrypted drives may answer why I encountered the problem. I may need to use the script.

OK I attenpted to use the recovery USB unsuccessfully.
From a previous reply "you will lose whatever is currently on the disk if you do this, but unless you have something vital on there, this is probably simplest:

I found no such option on the Windows 11 machine. Being curious by nature, I inserted the USB in the Windows 10 machine and opened the recovery USB. Here is what I found: (see contents.png, attached) Please note that bootfix.bin opens with VLC. Exploring further I found that .bin opens with VLC: see below.
This preset is there because I have numerous ISO videos which I view using VLC. Is there a workaround to prevent bootfix.bin prevent install as VLC on the recovery USB and allow me to continue to view my ISO videos normally?

Afterthought after posting. I found no option under default apps to toggle to an appropriate default.

first things first: My comments on my last post about default apps created a "duh" moment for me. The windows machine should display this.It is not the computer in question. ... my apologies ... I was very tired and frustrated.

Thanks to all who have posted followup comments and explanatory links. I found these extremely helpful to give me abetter understanding of the why? when? and what? So in reply the following is what I have discovered and operations I have performed.
1) Encryption occurred during initial setup ad updating. This was automatic.
2) My initial visit to aka,ms/myrecoverykey was probably before the microsoft revealed it in my account. I found my recovery key after my last post. I found and saved the key, dated 3/20/23.
3) I have attempted to use the recovery usb unsuccessfully. Per researched instructions safe boot has been disabled and FDD has been move to the top of the boot order.
4) The system has not been refreshed or reinstalled. I am directed to a login screen asking me to access my microsoft account to continue. I cannot do this because the windows 11 cannot connect to the internet.

What are the next instructions?

regards,
caffeine

Try3,
The post by SIW2 ia about a Dell. The problem computer is not a Dell machine. It is a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 14alc7 Windows 11. Amongst the numerous web sites I visited, I don't remember the source. --- but --- I found a few that addressed automatic encryption in Windows 11. Thanks anyway to both of you.

The present issue is that the Media Creator USB failed to boot when selecting FDD as the media. Again -- It is at the top of the boot order list in BIOS, and safe boot is temporarily disabled. I am directed to a login screen asking me to access my microsoft account to continue. I cannot do this because the windows 11 cannot connect to the internet.

So --- what next? try an ISO instead??

caffeine

The issue with automatic BL device encryption is NOT specific to Dell. It's with having a modern standby device, regardless of the manufacturer.

I've tried to follow this thread but will admit I'm a bit confused about the series of events. You keep saying FDD is top of boot order. FDD is a floppy disk drive which no one uses at all any more. When you made your installation media using the Media Creation Tool, you would have used a USB flash drive. There was absolutely no need to change the boot order in UEFI bios. The drive where Windows will be installed should be at the top of boot order.

To install Windows, you insert your installation media. Turn on the laptop and immediately start tapping F12. This will bring up your boot manager.
reference - How to select boot device from BIOS (Boot Menu) - ideapad, ThinkPad, ThinkStation, ThinkCentre, ideacentre - Lenovo Support US

In the boot manager that appears, select 'efi usb device'. The laptop will boot to the usb drive you created and the install process will begin.
Within the process, you will select the drive where you want to install Windows. Follow this tutorial EXACTLY. Clean Install Windows 11 Tutorial
BE SURE when you get to step 11 that all partitions are deleted and you choose to install windows on the unallocated space.

ALSO BE AWARE that when you get to step 16 of creating an account if you choose to use a MS account, Bitlocker device encryption will be automatically turned on again.
That's just the way it is now when installing Windows Home on a modern standby device. The ONLY way to prevent it is to use the process in the tutorial of creating a local account so pay attention. At the network step, choose "I don't have internet" Another choice you have to make at this point is whether you want your personal files to have a default location of Onedrive. If you want all you files to be on your disk drive, choose a local account.
OR

You can use a MS account, have your personal files stored on onedrive, and turn off device encryption once you boot into Windows.

If you are like me and want no part of encryption, especially after your nightmare experience. I would go with a local account.

Thanks glasskuter,
The first link you included, (How to select boot device from BIOS (Boot Menu) - ideapad, ThinkPad, ThinkStation, ThinkCentre, ideacentre - Lenovo Support US), won't work with my computer according to Lenovo. X This content is not compatible with the product you selected (IdeaPad Flex 5 14ALC7 Laptop - Type 82R9. Serial Number:*******). What should I do from here for another solutions?
The tutorial looks awesome. Thanks. The other instructions/advice you included connected with me.

I await your reply before proceeding.

regards,
caggeine

Here's some other ways to get into the BIOS on a Lenovo Ideapad Flex-5:

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows 11
I pulled both the maintenance manual and user manual for your laptop but found nothing about bios or boot menu. If rapidly tapping F12 as soon as you power on does not get you into the boot menu, try holding down FN key and F2 while it booting.. A menu should pop up, choose boot menu, then choose your efi usb as boot device. Let me know if it works.
