The cursor on my HP with Windows 11 freezes or disappears. I've tried reinstalling the drivers and doing a factory reset. If I close and open the lid the cursor functions again. Might it be a physical problem with the touchpad?

Sounds like hardware. Does it happen when the pc is under a heavy load or when it gets warm or just at random?

Yes, I believe it's a hardware problem with the pad. The cursor freezes randomly, and also system windows pop up where the cursor is placed.

can you elaborate on what "system windows" you are referring to?

The windows that come up when I normally right click on a random point on the screen--they just pop up for no reason. Also, the problem persists when I use a mouse. I am not a computer expert, so it's difficult for me to assess the situation.

I'd do a little testing with both touchpad and mouse.

Perform a clean boot to eliminate software conflict causing the issue. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. You have to use process of elimination to find which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

Oh the context menu. Got it.

Ok. That’s important info.

Aside from the clean boot @glasskuter suggested, you can also try

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional Mouse Settings > in Mouse Properties - Buttons tab > Uncheck Turn on ClickLock > Apply > OK
