Samsung has announced that it has started mass producing what it claims is the ‘industry’s smallest’ 14-nanometer (nm) DDR5 DRAM, offering drastically improved speeds over the previous generation DDR4 RAM (which is what most of our PCs are currently using). Samsung says its 14nm DDR5 DRAM will be able to hit speeds of 7.2 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is over twice the speed of DDR4, which peaks at 3.2Gbps.
I want one !! Samsung’s ‘extreme ultraviolet’ RAM is set to be super-fast – but when’s it coming to PCs?

Will DDR5 RAM Work On DDR4 Motherboard?​



You can use DDR5 RAM on DDR4 motherboards, but you won’t be getting the full potential. That’s what it all comes down to: either you buy a new system or save up for DDR5 if your motherboard can support it, otherwise use DDR4 RAM because it will still work on DDR5 motherboards. This means DDR4 motherboards and DDR5 memory won’t be cross-compatible. You just won’t get the same bandwidth as a consumer would by using identical software.

Also, running your RAM at a slower speed than advertised is not necessarily a bad thing; if anything, it will make your system run smoother and last longer. As long as the hardware fits and works with your motherboard, you shouldn’t have any problems whatsoever.

It is my understanding that you would need to practically update your entire system for DDR5. It is not like going from DDR3 to DDR4.

I would not either. my Digital Storm Velox is only 18 months or so old. I do not really need a super computer any more. I mostly play old games and with all of the chip delays and such. it may take years. :cool:

While the sequential transfer speeds will be improved, the latencies of the inital offerings kill it and it will perform worse than current ddr4. In a year or two they will catch up on latency. This is how it goes. It will also be very expensive at launch.

Here's Some DDR5-4800: Hands-On First Look at Next Gen DRAM DDR5 is designed to be physically incompatible with DDR4, just like every previous generation has been incompatible with all others.

Electrically, the differences between DDR4 and DDR5 are supposed to be major.

The DDR5 RDIMMS feature 288 pins on a slightly curved edge connector (to reduce the insertion force on every pin), just like DDR4 modules, yet its layout and design are a bit different when compared to DDR4 to prevent installment of DDR5 modules into DDR4 slots and vice versa.
