Hi,

We had another power outage here today, and my Dell Inspiron desktop shut off (I don't have a battery backup).

When power was restored, I turned the desktop on, but nothing happened for an hour. I tried to turn it off, but it wouldn't let me. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, but it still wouldn't let me turn the unit off, even when pressing the power button.

It took three hours to finally give me the option to boot up into Windows. Is this normal for Dell products? I thought I was going to have to buy a new unit.

Thank you,
Timmy 2 toes

Was the power out for 3 hours? I would think that's why nothing would power on.

I wouldn't think it was normal. Perhaps it was in the process of some sort of update when the glitch occurred and it took time to sort itself out when power was restored. You can check in Windows Update to see if any were installed.

I had the same issue about a month ago. My PC would not switch on and the motherboard seemed to not receive any power. Naturally my first thought was that the power supply was burnt and I took the cover off to inspect. I wanted to confirm that it was dead and I connected my PSU tester and switched it on. To my surprise and my horror it worked and the readings were good. Not very precise, such as exactly 12V, but 11.9V can work without issues, I have seen it before. I immediately suspected that the motherboard was burnt. Before I let the panic beat me, I decided to connect the cables back to confirm it. This time my PC switched on, loaded Windows and all devices were OK. SSD and other disks health were all 100%, no BSOD, nothing suspicious in Device Manager. Thanks God! What was it? Probably static electricity charge on the on/off button or elsewhere. I have seen it before. The computer doesn't power on with the first press of the button. You remove the power cable and press the button several times to discharge the static electricity. Then you put the cable back and it switches on. However, this trick didn't work in my case, that's why I feared that the motherboard was toast. Thanks God it wasn't. It just had larger charge and needed more time to discharge.
