Solved Different Internet speeds from different sites.

My problem relates to the Internet Speed tests.
As most know, there are numerous sites that allow testing the Internet speed. I tested my speed on my ISP provider site. Speed indicates about 350 Mbps. I am happy with that. But then I used a different site and the speed was 7 Mbps. I thought that site might be down for maintenance or something, so I tried a second site. Same, about 9 Mbps. Another site, 8 Mbps.
So you see the problem here. My ISP says I have a relatively fast download that can run as high as 500 Mbps, while every other site I tried said it was a really poopy 8 to 10 Mbps.
So, I don't know what the true speed is.
Comments welcome, and happy holidays to all.

There's no, one site fits all.
I use these sites...

I choose various servers to get an average.
When you pick servers, think about time of day, possible congestion, etc.
Like... it's not a good time to run speed tests, about an hour after everyone gets off work.
Keep in mind, this is the holidays and there are tons of people sitting at home on their computers.
And you might not want to choose a server that's located... "so far out in the sticks, we still eat possum".

Also... if you list your ISP and/or country, there may be other suggestions for where to run your speed tests.

Thanks for the reply.
No, it isn't caused by the crowded Internet. When my ISP says 400 Mbps while at least ten other sites, all located in-country, say it's around 10 MBps., that is one big difference. There has to be a better explanation.
Again, thanks for replying.😊

In CMD [Command Prompt] type tracert sitenamehere.com, press Enter. Should see all the other Servers that the signal goes through to get to the one desired, can be big differences due to variables in the Servers, quality of connections, number of uses on them, etc. Different sites, different routes, different speeds.

If a large majority says you are slow I think your provider has some explaining to do. Perhaps they configured you incorrectly? You may have high speed to them but slow beyond that.
I and friends use Ookla (speedtest.net) that Ghot mentioned and find it reliable.

In my case it is reliably 16 MBit. Around 2006 I was one of the early adopters of AT&T Uverse (a form of DSL), now supplied by Frontier. I actually have a twisted pair wire from my house to the local sub-station. Speed never varies because I don't compete with neighbors.

Just a thought...speed throttling on the sly, by your ISP.

Regardless, you need to contact them, and explain your situation.

I wish you the best. (y)

Other than doing the speed test from different sites, have you noticed a decrease in your download speed? If you have then you should call your provider.

Providers claim a fast speed, in reality it is less. I don't worry or bother checking it unless I see a noticeable drop, which has never happened
