Disable forced bios update on windows

Hi everyone.

As you probably know windows will flash your bios without asking your permission, While 99% of this goes well there is always 1 percent the goes bad, really bad.
I need a way to disable only the bios update for at least a month. Why? because I'm a technician and I do a lot of new install and at least half has firmware update which is forced update. The last thing I want is to have to repair dead or bricked motherboard after just a simple clean install. Another option is to completely disable the updates for a month (pause updates will still force bios update). Yes I know about windows updates blocker.

Any suggestion or trick to stop updates temporary or just disable drivers updates (Home addition)?

Not sure if that’s actually factual unless you’ve agreed to include driver updates. I’ve never had it happen. Not for PC’s or Laptops

Same here.

The only reports of that sort of thing I have seen is from owners of appliance PC's; AKA Dell, HP, etc., when they are not trying to force it through whatever utility app they use.

I've had my bios update in a surprise move; however, I don't mind it doing that. Saves me one more thing to remember.

I'm not really sure that Windows updates your bios, seems to me that would be the motherboard manufacturer's job.

Motherboard manufacturer's provide the updates for download on their support sites or notify of an update whatever utility apps they use (Armor Crate for Asus for example). What they don't do is ever force it through Windows Update of the app.

Not to argue the point but when my bios update, they do it out of the blue and it doesn't have anything at all to do with Windows update. I've never had the bios to update while I was during a Windows update.

Do you have any HP software on your PC that has auto update enabled, Wynona?

Not that I know of; however, I never looked for any. I leave all of HP software alone.

Both ankles are doing fine. The main thing holding me back is the subconscious fear that I'm going to fall on my butt if I try to walk When I'm between the parallel bars, I have security and I can walk, but the minute I get out from between the bars my legs refuse to cooperate!

There should be a HP folder in your Start menu or somewhere. I’d have a search and see if you can find the updates section, see if it’s set to auto update, if there is in fact any software at all.
If it doesn’t bother you, leave it?

Maybe a steel frame walker for a while until your confidence builds? Then a 4 pronged base walking stick, then you can fly on your own.
But I am sure you guys have already discussed all that

In some cases they do. I had it happen to my laptop. Now I can't turn off Modern Standby.

I have the Walker. I just don't have the strength to go very far at a time. And I've got a couple of canes, but haven't used them in a while.

I can assert that if one has "include drivers with windows update" enabled, that device WILL sometimes get OEM bios updates along with their other drivers. I have noticed this happening more so when one's bios is outdated by several versions.

I always advise informed users to disable drivers updating through WU and deal with your drivers yourself. I advise OEM users to use whatever driver updating app their manufacturer offers to keep all drivers updated through using it, including bios. Regarding Intel and AMD graphics drivers if you want your driver updated sooner than what you will get through the OEM, you can also use Intel and AMD driver updating apps.

Custom built machines can use the mobo manufacture's driver updating app.

To keep either an OEM, Intel, or AMD app from automatically updating your drivers, disable it from autostarting with Windows and just use it manually.

That's right. It happens through UEFI's UpdateCapsule mechanism. Windows has had this since version 8 at least.

Exactly. I do have bios programmer but it's not always possible to find bin file to recover the bios especially on a new laptop.

My personal experience has been that Windows will not do something so drastic as to flash my system BIOS without asking for my consent first. This isn't an opinion. This has been my experience. I recall an incident where Windows was colluding with Intel to inject microcode into the Intel G3258 Silver Anniversary edition CPU to hobble the chip for 'security reasons' but it is my understanding that it was introduced as an optional update. This move prevented users from taking such liberties with the CPU as to attain clock speeds of over 5GHz on a little dual core that cost less than $100 US. For quite some time it was all the rave among gamers until it wasn't. Again, this isn't mere opinion. I own this CPU. I still tinker with it.

I would venture that if this is a paramount concern just turn off Windows Update altogether. Stuff happens and mis-clicks can be easily red as "yes". You can always turn on your permissions for updates when you're ready to receive them again. Even then there is no 100% guarantee that Windows won't foist an update on you in spite of this. After all, it is their software that you have been licensed to use and Microsoft reserves the right to do what they like with it. MS is notorious for their caveats. Herein lies the crux of the matter: Where does one draw the line? I like to draw it at the hardware but in principle I cannot trust the idea that Windows will not violate my preferences. Wishing you the best.

I turn off download drivers in any case as I've had that go south more than once when I allowed it years ago. I certainly don't want Windows deciding to update my BIOS without my consent, that would annoy the crap out of me!

Microsoft can get into more than enough trouble just updating Windows, no need to turn them loose on other stuff!

I'm not sure it will prevent. My only option as a technician that doing a lot of new install is to completely disable the updates but that's a problem as well for the customers .

I would keep a flash drive of current firmware versions and flash the devices before I image them. I know Dell recommends this; other OEMs probably do also. That also keeps the device from wanting to do a firmware update when the user finally gets it.
