This tutorial will show you how to permanently disable creating a Microsoft Edge desktop shortcut whenever updated for all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The Microsoft Edge web browser is based on Chromium and was released on January 15, 2020. It is compatible with all supported versions of Windows, and macOS. With speed, performance, best in class compatibility for websites and extensions, and built-in privacy and security features.

Lately, whenever Microsoft Edge gets updated in Windows, a Microsoft Edge desktop shortcut is automatically created.

You can manually delete this Microsoft Edge desktop shortcut, but it will just get created again after the next update.

You must be signed in as an administrator to disable Microsoft Edge creating a desktop shortcut.

This will be applied to any installed Microsoft Edge Stable, Beta, Developer, and Canary channels.

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (disable) or step 3 (undo) below for what you want.

2 Disable Microsoft Edge Creating Desktop Shortcut for All Users

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the REG file below, and go to step 4 below.

Disable_creating_Microsoft_Edge_desktop_shortcut_for_all_users.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate]
"CreateDesktopShortcutDefault"=dword:00000000
"RemoveDesktopShortcutDefault"=dword:00000001

3 Undo Disable Microsoft Edge Creating Desktop Shortcut for All Users

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the REG file below, and go to step 4 below.

Undo_disable_creating_Microsoft_Edge_desktop_shortcut_for_all_users.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate]
"CreateDesktopShortcutDefault"=-
"RemoveDesktopShortcutDefault"=-

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 Restart the computer to apply.

8 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

In Brinkmann's (quoted in my post #1 in the "Solution?" thread) registry entry, the Dword is CreateDesktopShortcutDefault, and the value is set to 0 (zero). In your proposal, the Dword is RemoveDesktopShortcutDefault, and the value is 1.

In my registry, I renamed the Dword (changing Create to Remove), and changed the value from 0 to 1.

I'm waiting with "bated breath" to see whether MS sidesteps this approach and blesses us with more Edge desktop shortcuts and All apps entries.

Thanks again for looking into this.

Dan
