Disabling Desktop OneDrive Backup Causes Desktop Icons to Disappear - Why?

I discovered by accident that disabling OneDrive backup of Desktop causes all Desktop icons to disappear. I can easily recreate them using the "Shortcut to Desktop" provided. But why must they be removed in the first place?

When you backup a folder (ex: Desktop) to OneDrive, that folder's content gets moved into the OneDrive folder on your PC to sync with your online OneDrive.

When you turn off backing up the folder (ex: Desktop) to OneDrive, you'll have to manually move the filles back into the folder (ex: Desktop) from the OneDrive folder location on your PC.
