I'm using Windows 11, and recently, I've been having issues with Windows Update. I prefer being able to check for updates manually, and choose when and what to install. However, recently the Windows Update icon appeared in my taskbar, and I can't get rid of it.

So far, I've tried:

-Setting my wifi as a metered connection
-Disabling Windows Update in services.msc
-Making a registry key for Windows Update marked 'NoAutoUpdate'

I don't have Group Policy Editor on my computer, as some guides have mentioned, and Windows Update isn't letting me pause updates any more. Is there any way of preventing Windows from checking for updates and getting rid of these notifications permanently? Some of the updates it's asking about are ones I don't want to install.

You can manage Windows 11 updates with WuMgr (Update Manager for Windows) use attached the batch script to "
Set Windows Update to Notify for Download in Windows".

Download WuMgr 1.1 - MajorGeeks

I've set WuMgr to disable automatic updates, but I still have the Windows Update icon in the taskbar. Is there something I'm missing/doing wrong?

Only reason you will see Windows Update icon in the taskbar when you need to restart your computer to make installed updates take effect.

Security updates are a fact of life with Windows. You can delay them but sooner than later, they get installed.

Noting you say you are on an old build (23H2), I'm wondering why that is. Could be your own choice- have you perhaps used Target Feature Update to stay on that major build? If you had, I might have expected you to have received all updates for that build, and no more would be offered.

It's perfectly possible to take control of Windows Update- this has been described so often, and in tenforums and elevenforum tutorials (see the Tutorial section).

Pro users (i.e. those with the Group Policy editor) can set up dates to 'Notify' - suggested by Freebooter- no idea if that works for Home.
That means you get a notification of an available update, but nothing is downloaded until you approve it.
Used together with Target Feature Update, you could stay on a major build.

Trying to download updates manually yourself from a catalogue is likely to lead you coming back here with problems and questions.

Free tools like WUMT (just search) let you scan for updates using that tool, then you can choose (check box) from the listed updates or choose to hide (disable) them.
