Just had to replace the 9yr old 120GB SSD in my desktop. When I look at its replacement in either CrystalDisk Info or in Stellar Drive Monitor it is reported as Bad but this is purely on the grounds that its temp is 40C, but my understanding is that 40C is well inside the normal operating temp range for SSDs. Should I be looking at other software or just ignore it? The new SSD itself is performing completely normally but these readings are making me feel a little uneasy.

40°C is not too hot, running something that exercises my SSD (eg. sfc /scannow) can easily reach that. Just over 30°C is my normal when idle.

In CrystalDiskInfo click on the big temperature indicator. This opens the alarm temperature window where you can set any alarm temp you like. Sounds like your has been set too low, click the Default button then Apply and you should see the alarm will be reset to 60°C.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Portable 8.17.14 doesn't do it either. Something must be blocking it but no idea what atm :(

Just had a peek at Stellar Drive Manager. That also has the capability to change the threshold values but, just like CrystalDisk Info, on this system you can't change them. Didn't make it clear but all this is on a Win 10 system, not Win 11, but that shouldn't make any difference.

I can also change the alarm temperature using the free version. BTW, I wish my SSD temperature was as low as 40C!

@Bree I checked out your link for the CrystalDiskInfo portable version. I find that totally unnecessary.

What I did is download the ZIP file version of CrystalDiskInfo called CrystalDiskInfo8_17_14.zip from the Crystal Dew World website

To create the portable version I do the following:
  1. Create a folder called CrystalDiskInfo
  2. Open the Zip file and copy the following to this folder
    • File DiskInfo64.exe
    • Folder CdiResource

OK, tried that too but nothing has changed, default set at 40C and can't be changed. On a whim I've also tried disabling Windows Security first but nada! Better remember to turn it back on :-)

I have the free version of Crystal Disk Info as well and can change the temp alarm settings. C and D drives are SSD. Not sure why it is listing two S drives, but it should be an S and a T drive, which are HDD.

I don't know why you cannot change your settings, I can on all my machines.

However, for CrystalDiskInfo Portable you can manually edit the setting. The Portable App version keeps these in:
...\CrystalDiskInfoPortable\Data\DiskInfo.ini

You can edit this file in Notepad while the app is closed. The [AlarmTemperature] section is at the bottom, there's a separate entry for each disk.

Could you post a screenshot of CrystalDiskInfo showing this drive? Seeing all the data might help explain why it shows bad.

All the SMART data looks healthy, nothing I can see there that would justify the 'Bad' status.
In CrystalDiskInfo when any SMART data item is unhealthy the blue dot to the left of the bad item turns amber or red. All yours are blue.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Never heard of Bilksem before and the price of £9.99 for a 128 GB drive seems too good to be true. :(

Yep, SMART data looks 100% in CrystalDiskInfo and Stellar says same, so probably - hopefully - all OK, and I can even change the defaults now too :D

Take another look at the Amazon ad - many budget drives arouund that price level. Mine is the £16.08 offer.
