Do you use Insider on production PC?

I'm curious if you guys use Insider as a daily driver on your main PC or run it in a VM/separate PC for testing?

I do use the Dev build as my daily driver on my main PC and Canary on my second machine.
I would not recommend doing so as the safe thing to do would be to run any Insider build on a VM.

You asking such a global question about 'Insider' gives me the impression that you should stick to official releases.
Stability generally depends on which build branch you are talking about.

As stated, I would not recommend running IP builds on your main machine.

One workaround though, is to install them as bootable virtual disks. Then edit your boot menu so you can load these builds whenever you want to test something. This is for more advanced users, but there are plenty of guides how to dual or even quad boot from virtual disks. Best part of this is that you get access to native hardware while keeping the OS system files separated from each other.

Which one? There are four Insider channels, in roughly increasing level of 'instability', plus the public release on the General Availability channel.

Release Preview - the most stable, tests updates a few weeks ahead of release to GA.
Beta - reasonably stable.
Dev - less stable.
Canary - most experimental and least stable.

None are completely safe to use as a 'daily driver', RP is perhaps the safest.

I use GA as the main OS on all my machines.
For Insider builds I use VMs, or multi-boot using Native Boot Windows 11 Virtual Hard Disk (VHDX)

FWIW......... I use the beta build as my main OS. It's more than stable enough for this use, IMO,

I've tinkered with beta builds, but I prefer the released versions. I've yet to see anything in the pre-release stuff that I must have right away. I got my fill of beta versions years ago, now I just want my machines to work properly. Hard enough with released software, never mind beta software. :lmao:

Just a note, when I was in the Win10 IP there were always warnings not to use it on a production machine or the only machine as there would always be changes that may break the system and I certainly saw some, a couple even needed a full reinstall.

I don't think workarounds for unsupported devices has any significance here. The Patch Tuesday CU that had 'issues' on a few devices (WU would not see it, let alone install it) was fixed for those devices with Wednesday's OOB CU.

I have a mix of supported and unsupported devices. All but one had no problem installing Tuesday's CU. The only one that had issues on Tuesday was a fully supported device, that one now has got Wednesday's 2nd CU.

There was an Out-Of-Band update after Patch Tuesday, not seeing any issues yet. One of those had to do with a game but I'm not a gamer so didn't pay much attention to it.

I'm retired and like experimenting and tinkering with the new builds within reason. I use RP builds on two machines since they are normally pretty safe and close to release. I use Beta builds on my old machine which sometimes is more stable then the RP builds lol. Usually both those builds only incur annoyance type bugs that are eventually fixed, nothing that prevents you from using the computer or is a major show stopper. I also keep Macrium Reflect backups though for worst case scenarios.

My query on this is : What do you consider as "Production". I doubt if any business that wants to stay operational will use "experimental builds" - which lets face it are what these Ms builds are for running their day to day business operations - whether huge one's like say Shell, SAP , Google etc or small "under the railway arches" one or 2 man startups.

Absolutely nothing wrong in using these for test scenarios etc -- but "Daily Production" -- no thanks !!!

There were 'compatibility issues', but only for a limited set of devices, on those the 4349 build wasn't even being offered in Windows Update. One out of six of my 24H2 machines was hit by this. If a PC got the 4349 build on Tuesday then it doesn't need the Out of Band update.

Microsoft said there was a major issue with KB5060842 (June 10 Patch Tuesday security update) that causes the PC to reboot unexpectedly when launching games like Fortnite. As a result, KB5060842 was pulled from Windows Update and the out of band update next day.
