The Samsung NVMe PM9C1a 1024GB SSD does not use a Phison NAND controller. Instead, it uses Samsung's in-house developed Piccolo (S4LY022) 6-Core 4 Channel Controller. The PM9C1a utilizes a controller built using Samsung's 5-nanometer process and seventh-generation V-NAND technology. 🤔

My main PC (see 2nd system specs) originally had Windows 7 64-bit and then upgraded to Windows 10 64-bit. That was in Legacy BIOS mode (aka CSM mode) and with Secure Boot disabled. So I planned to upgrade again to Windows 11. Due to some incompatibility in 2021 that I didn't have the knowledge to troubleshoot back then, I eventually did a clean installation of Windows 11 21H2. However I did it in Legacy BIOS mode (MBR) because my then SSD was only 250GB and I didn't want to lose any valuable disk space with the extra partitions of GPT, no matter how small they would be. It is an unsupported system, so I bypassed compatibility check anyway and was able to install Windows 11 in Legacy BIOS mode without TPM without Secure Boot. Nowadays I have one more advantage, I don't have to worry about 2011 vs 2023 certificates or other UEFI mode related issues such as BitLocker locking my system without notice.

So, "No" then.

Sure, why not, it is free and it does something without affecting performance, unlike AV.
What he said.....

No... Legacy and MBR is king with multiboot systems.
Secure boot may be a problem for conventional multiboot, especially when mixing Linux and Windows installs.

But mine are all Windows installs, and multiboot is done by using native boot .vhdx. I leave secure boot turned on by default and have no issues.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

My opinion is not worth diddly squat to anyone but me. I have good computer safety practices and am not one who frets about security on my devices. IMO the biggest problem in the wild is malware and the odds of an average user getting hit by a bootkit are really, really low. If I am ever gotcha'ed, I'll deal with it. The hackers will be sorely disappointed as my data is useless to anyone but me.

I don't want to deal with revocations and do want to boot from any boot media I choose whenever I want without having to fiddlefart with bios. I fully understand the ramificatications of my choice of using/not using SB either way.
I would never recommend anyone else do as I do.

Yeah, but not only that.. :-) when dualboot Linux Windows, windows updates or H version upgrades just love to overwrite the Linux bootloader.. When using legacy boot and MBR, you can let the linux boot disk be ext3 and windows cant touch that filesystem's bootloader.. also Legacy/MBR makes it so easy to work with hotswap bays with systemdisks :-)

Secure boot is MS speak for a slowly tightening noose around our necks. Before you notice what is going on, you have a closed platform and walled garden just like Apple, Chromebooks and, soon to be, Google Android Phones. It is all feeding into the end goal of AI controlling the populations ability to think independently. I always have a "plan B" computer (linux PC) for when the big corporates piddle me off and regularly try out latest linux on my main laptop to make sure I know what releases work or don't work. No, I don't buy into conspiracy theories - just a realist that observes trends over a long period of time. Some people sleepwalk into traps, some willingly walk into them, some people fight to stay out of the traps even if they have to increasingly play "Whack-a-Mole" with defeating AI and so-called "Security" features.

Like I said, Microsoft tries to scare us that an non-compliant PC without TPM and Secure Boot is going to catch a virus or malware any minute. Compare that to third-party antivirus advertisements that try to convince us that without their product our computer is a virus magnet. BS! Only once I remember ever catching a virus which damaged every EXE file in my system and that was because I have visited a suspicious site. So if you keep your antivirus updated and watch what you do online, you should be enough secure. Human factor is the weak point of even the most secure systems.

yeah they do.

I did a tiny research.. (to tiny to actually write an article, as i didn't investigate deep enough) but anyway.. i looked at Legacy bios VS uefi bios malware and the risk of getting it. First its pretty low (unless you do stupid stuff that increases the risk) today's malware 2026 is written for uefi systems as so few is using legacy systems.. so its actually lower risk with Legacy malware as those malware is old and a antivirus program will detect them as they isn't zerodays any longer.

Nothing really to do with secure boot that protect the boot-files.. But fun fact for bios rootkits. 🤓
