I would not be overly concerned if someone snagged my laptop. I'd just be upset about having to get another. I don't keep serious personal data on my laptop. I own the cheapest laptop in the house, pieced together with used Acer parts. Now if they took one of my work stations I would be livid. But then hauling one of those up the stairs and out the door would be a bit of an exercise. They would likely need a dolly. 😅

The Cooler Master ATCS 840 weighs around 30lbs when empty. Those spinners can really add up over time and there's lots of room for spinners and other stuff. My Thermal Take Level 10 GT weighed in around 80 lbs when I last stood with it on a bathroom scale. These are big azz PCs so you need the room for them if you want to use them.

YellowKey would have been blocked if you had a BIOS password required for boot.

As I understand it, YellowKey is just one exploit of a whole family of possible threats that target vulnerabilities of the current EFI secure boot logic for validation.

The saving grace is they ALL require physical presence at the system AND an ability to boot from a legacy drive to be able to fiddle with the EFI folder contents. That still makes disabling booting from legacy drives in BIOS and protecting BIOS settings with a password (something most any modern BIOS is capable of) very important.

No. YellowKey was an exploit where if you invoked WinRE, one of the background processes was incorrectly granted a level of privileged rights. This allowed an attacker to use that process to use the normal Bitlocker function to export the key. Like you would when you run manage-bde -protectors to legitimately back up a key.

It has nothing to do with Secure Boot.

That was a different exploit. Prolly already known by the same researcher who leaked YellowKey. It's believed he has a long running beef with MS Security, and is hiding more bugs which he leaks over time to embarrass them.

I have been pointing this out about TPM2 ever since Win11 made its debut. The whole thing is a charade.

The logical failure is what's the point of secure boot if nothing protects the WinRE environment from someone using it to do as you say above.

And really, it sure seems to me it (yellowkey and similar) has everything to do with Secure Boot if its effective for bypassing and rendering it ineffective for preventing an attacker from gaining access to encrypted volumes. They really need to fix the Winre FsTx process that allows this if they want Secure Boot to be seen as more than a block of swiss cheese... like the jokers have it now.

I use BitLocker on my two computers and on my two Samsung 4TB T9 Portable Backup SSD drives. This is the first I've heard anything like that. What's your source?

OK. BitLocker is important security for me. I'm always mobile and my office is wherever I happen to open my backpack.
