.doc files not appearing in search results

One possibility would be to take a look at one or more of the Office / Word Clones, they tend to run a few iterations behind the current official Word version and may support saving of .DOC files from Docx and many other document forms - as most of these clones are totally free open source, they may even support Dragon directly

We knew wordpad couldn't 'save as' doc. We were just trying to force indexing to use the wordpad filter. In all honesty, I had no idea it would also change the file type. That was a very old idea someone used from back in the Windows 7 days and it was for .txt files rather than .doc files. We were grasping at straws. :giggle:
So was I, and I realized my straws were invalid. Which is why I came back and said to disregard me.

I have seen many times the good advice to do a clean install. It is such a hassle that I have avoided it - to my detriment. I really DO appreciate all the time and effort people have devoted to helping with this problem.

Problem solved. Indexing got worse, with it stalling and taking 2 days to index 30,000 files - something it should be able to do in an hour or so. Read that reinstalling Win 11 in "save Apps and Files" mode could fix the slow indexing problem. It has not finished indexing as I write this but it is back to normal speed and appears to be indexing .doc files too.

Thanks to all who responded to this post.

Stewart and others on here: Glasskuter and I are working on a similar problem on another thread.
As your thread and experience is three months old, I'm wondering if I can ask you to test something:

Three of us (including Glasskuter!) are currently having trouble finding documents that Glass says s/he could find before in File Explorer.
Here's my situation:

Searching works for all document types if the searchword is in the filename AND also works if the searchword is in the contents in Excel, Powerpoint, PDF, or txt. The ONE thing that doesn't work for me, though, is Word documents of either .doc or .docx format.

Could you do a little testing and see if your current experience maybe matches mine? Would love to discover that my experience is somewhat shared...maybe that would increase the chance of MS doing something about it. Thank you!

@miloshapiro Interesting development. On my desktop, I made a docx file with the word 'hubble' in the body only, Search found it. I then took the word hubble out of the body and renamed the file to hubble.docx. Search still found it.

In my downloads folder and pictures folder, the file was found both in contents and file name

I did the exact same thing at the root of C: Search did not find it with hubble in the body, but did find it with hubble in the file name.

I moved on to my data drive. With hubble in the body, nothing found, but search did find it when I removed the word from the body and renamed the file to hubble.docx. My data drive DOES have the box checked :"allow files on this drive to have content indexed in addition to file properties."

Makes no sense. It's like it depends on if the file is in a folder it searches both file name and contents but if it's not in a folder it's searching filename only.

Anyone else??

I had the same problems as everyone else here. I could not search for the content of word processing files (Word and WordPerfect)
PROBLEM SOLVED
I was on the phone with Microsoft support.
We did an "In Place Upgrade" See instructions at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...ndows-11/4d469147-2747-4dcb-88a4-aae9273a4500
After the In Place Upgrade, I re-built the Index
Finally, I can search file contents!
Try it!!

not for me. i just tried it yesterday and still only finding a certain document by some words in it but not others. DocFetcher (3rd party searching software) finds it by all of the words I'm using. It's just a hassle to always have to go open that.
