Solved Does an OS need more RAM over the years?

I am in the process of putting together a new desktop and will be using 2 x 4 Gb DDR4 ram. I do not do any video editing or any other ram intensive work. The price of a couple of sticks of second hand DDR4 2400 ram is low as the early adopters are upgrading to faster versions. I would advise against using the minimum recommended ammount of ram, as you won't get the best out of your pc during its entire life. Another thing to remember is that if you use the onboard graphics that some CPU's have, some of your ram will be allocated to that. My Athlon 3000G reserves a couple of Gb of ram.

I think this is representative for a bottom line biz computer, it's buyer beware of the 'up to' in the link below. Of the 4 models shown in the link, the cheapest one has indeed i3, two have i5, and one has i7.

I have started a poll thread on this issue, BTW, please add to the poll, thanks!

A lot of business uses don't require an I7 and I3 is still a good process for basic tasks.

Even with multitasking a 4core processor would be adequate, IMO,.
Yeah, for sure. That Threadripper system is for heavy work, I mean REALLY heavy work. But work nevertheless.

Unless MS were to add some new memory heavy new functionality to a Windows update (very unlikely), Windows is going to be doing the same stuff it always does and won't need and increased amount of RAM. This is within the same gen of Windows, of course. What's more likely is that the many programs you have installed are going to be expanding, updating, adding features, etc... and becoming more memory hungry over time, and more likely culprits behind needing more memory. But for the most part, it's easy to have a lot of excess RAM now unless you are gaming.

For gaming 16GB is more than fine in most cases except for 2 latest HUGE AAA titles for which I highly recommend 32GB.

Another thing to remember is that if you use the onboard graphics that some CPU's have, some of your ram will be allocated to that.
Yeah. For large monitors, 32" and up, you really need a GPU. I love my 32" monitor, it is for the first time ever that I don't automatically maximize windows, and share the screen real estate. I could not go back to a smaller size, at least not for my workhorse (I am not a gamer)

I recently completed my move to 4K monitors so now use a 32" and a 43" 3840 x1460 32 bit colour HDR screens on the desktop and the graphics card is a Nvidia gtx 1650 and it manages fine for my needs, the Photo editing I do uses the main processor rather than the Graphics card as you would see for a gaming system. (my laptop also has a 3840 x 2400 32 bit colour HDR touchscreen ) and it is possible to run the two other monitors from the laptop in addition to the native one in a three screen setup.

my normal way to edit images is to show the full size image live on the larger monitor whilst the editing is one on the smaller monitor zoomed as needed

Yeah. For large monitors, 32" and up, you really need a GPU. I love my 32" monitor, it is for the first time ever that I don't automatically maximize windows, and share the screen real estate. I could not go back to a smaller size, at least not for my workhorse (I am not a gamer)
Not really...Monitor size has nothing to do with needing a discrete GPU or not. My laptop can gladly display 3 x 4k image on a 20" or 120" display using integrated graphics. What it can not do though is run AAA games at 144pfs.

You may be right ... although, when the first cheap 32" monitors came out, I bought one, and it did not perform well with the integrated graphics of my (not new) workhorse with 16GB RAM. Rather than buying more RAM, I bought a cheap GPU, addressing the issue at the source, and problem solved.

I find myself thinking like an IT director who has to keep people productive at minimum cost, LOL.

Edit: This made me go to the Intel website > look at 11th generation chips > integrated graphics > maximum resolutions > wow, truly impressive!

Yes, performance has changed a lot. I remember times when 240p was the thing, now we can quite easily display 4k resolution on multiple monitors at the same time. 😄

I remember monochromatic screens. Black screen and either orange or green text. :)
