Solved Does anyone know what this is?

Hi. Today I was trying to figure out what the f keys do in my computer, after clicking on f12, I started getting the big screen that can be seen in the picture below when I open a picture in Paint, make changes to the picture but don't save the changes. It is pretty annoying. The picture at the bottom shows what opens up when I click f12. I dont know what that is for but messing with it trying to figure out what it is for is what caused to start getting the big screen. Please help.

The first image — When using Paint and you press F12, instead of overwriting the existing file, Paint will open the Save As dialog box, letting you choose a different name, file type (PNG, JPG, BMP, GIF, etc.), or location to save your image.
This is different from Ctrl+S, which just saves changes to the current file.

Would you rather lose your changes?
It appears you may have somehow made the dialogue box, larger. Can you drag it from the corners and make it smaller again?

The second image — That is the Windows Projection menu (Project sidebar. You normally open it by pressing Win + P?)

That is the Paint 'Save As' dialogue, kind of. which is sort of a standard for some MS Apps.

Though it does not look right. Your previous posts suggest you are using system mods.

Hi ants. That is the problem. The dialogue box is larger. I also get the small Save dialogue, about 50% of the time. I thought that perhaps when I clicked f12 to see what it was for, it somehow affected Paint. What it does is open the Windows Projection menu (I didn't know what that was). So, there is something wrong. I was thinking about Repair and/or Reset. Appreciate your reply.

Hi Helmut. Thanks for the reply. Exactly, the Save as dialogue does not look right. That is why I posted here. FWIW, I did not do anything on purpose to change the dialogue or anything in Paint. Like I said in my OP, after clicking f12, all of the sudden I realized there was this large dialogue box. Appreciate your reply.

That is what I was doing when the dialogue box became a monster Dialogue box.

The key more than likely has multiple functions. F12 performs certain functions, dependent upon what is forefront and if FnLock is enabled, it will perform whatever the image on the key itself depicts, differs with model of keyboard.

Probably something is wrong with your scaling settings. To restore the normal size, I would try to change scaling temporarily and see what happens. Then set the previous scaling and check if the Save as window has returned to a smaller size. Also try changing the display resolution temporarily.

Thanks (spapakons/dacrone) for your replies, they are appreciated. So, I ran Repair and Reset for Paint, and it didn't do nothing. A few minutes ago, I did a System restore to 3 days ago, and so far it appears the issue has been fixed.

For information only. Perhaps it was not clicking on f12 what triggered or produced the monster Save as dialogue box but certainly, clicking on one of the f keys is what caused this issue, I just don't know which one it was. Thank you again.

Bo, did you try pressing it a second time while the dialogue box was open?

I am sure I did. I looked for a manual for this HP 310 keyboard but couldn't find it. If there was a manual, I would not have messed with the keys. With past computers, I never clicked on keys I don't know what they for but with this one it still bothers me that the keyboard doesn't seem to have a key for taking a screenshot, and that is why I was playing with the keys. This keyboard is nice in some ways. The keys are large and separated from each other so it is comfortable to click on them and they are easier to see than on laptops but I miss the screenshot key. The keyboard came with what I bought, an HP All-in-One 24-cr0055m PC with Windows 11 Home.

There isn’t a keyboard known to man, with keys far enough apart for me to not have to spend a 3rd of my day using spell check.

2 finger typing, poor eyesight and fat fingers.

What makes it harder is that I have a hyper sensitive Corsair K95 Platinum Keyboard.
If you so much as breathe on a key, it registers. You hardly have to touch anything.

this is definitely microsoft's fault. i update monthly and after just running updates this week i have now seen this on 3 separate PCs that have zero in common as far as installed programs, etc.

Thanks Dacrone. Good to know that it was nothing I did that triggered the monster dialogue box. It is a relief so I appreciate you posting about it. For me, the monster doesn't open up every time I close Paint without saving but it does sometimes. I will mark this thread as solved, as your post has solved the mystery.
