Drive stops being recognized during large file transfer

Hope everyone's doing well, --

Upon transferring a large file between hard drives for a backup (whether that be via Explorer, FreeFileSync, or TeraCopy), the transfer fails over time and Windows quits recognizing both drives as they no longer show up on Explorer. I'm not sure this is a hardware issue as this consistantly happens throughout hard drives (but not SSDs), this did not happen when I was on Windows 10, and the drives come back upon rebooting and they show up on Device Manager. Transfers with small files are fine, I suppose I could partition them in chunks but this would be sub-optimal considering the size of certain files. I attempted to scour through documentation & previous posts to figure out what was going on, but to no avail.

Thank you guys!!

Try different USB port for the external drive or SATA port for internally connected Storage drive.

Use crystaldiskinfo to view health report of the HDD.

Open the Command Prompt as an admin and schedule a disk error checking on next computer boot time by executing Chkdsk X: /r command replace X: letter with the HDD you want to scan for errors.

if you have the drive connected to a usb on top or front of your case, its most likely capping out the internal usb connection of the cable from the MB to the case. connect the drive to the usb on the back as those ports are soldered directly to the MB.

Just ran chkdsk with no errors, problem occurs with every USB port (including the ones at the back), every drive shows up as healthy. This happens with any HDD, I bought a new one and the same error occurs. I am baffled, maybe the USB cables I use are faulty?

Maybe loose USB motherboard connection, check to see USB port connected securely on motherboard.

do into advanced power settings and disable usb selective suspend
freefilesync still spits the same error "ERROR_NO_SUCH_DEVICE: A device which does not exist was specified. [CopyFileEx]"... is it a problem on windows?

Maybe loose USB motherboard connection, check to see USB port connected securely on motherboard.
After opening, none of the ports seem loose, and this error persists on all USB ports.

Try transferring the equivalent amount of smaller files and see if the problem still happens after all those transfers are made. Your problem seems similar to what I've noticed about explorer crashing when its cache is full, which happens after moving lots of files around.

lets try other methods first. you can run a repair install/ in-place upgrade without losing data

I split a large file into four using 7z, I was able to transfer them alongside its original large file (first time this happens) before the error came back. This is weird, is it a cache issue?

I can only guess so. I've been dealing with it in every version since win95. Once I move so many files around explorer crashes and restarts.

Yes but you have done a lot of registry tweaks. Maybe you fixed it.

what would a fix for this be? just keep transferring split files or reinstall windows?
