Drive stops being recognized during large file transfer

Disable thumbnail view to see it will help also use the batch script to clear thumbnail cache.

Can't I clear it here by checking the box and clicking remove files? I'd like to keep them if possible.

Keep them but by disabling thumbnail preview you will see if it's caused by thumbnail preview i must say you said it might be caused by File Explorer cache size which is why i suggested increasing the icons cache size i never said this is the cause of it.

Yes it seems to be caused by some sort of cache, but I don't know which. There is a lot about memory that I don't understand.

Clearing the File Explorer cache could resolve issues with how files and folders are displayed.
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click on the three dots (menu) at the top and select Options.
  3. In the Folder Options window, go to the General tab.
  4. Click on Clear next to Clear File Explorer history.
  5. Click OK to close the window.

There is no other File Explorer cache that as i know of.

They are no use with your problem.

Explorer has the largest paged pool and nonpaged pool of all processes on my pc. I don't know what that means since I don't have a pagefile.

For analyzing the issue directly, we could try to collect a dump file while the explorer hang or crash. Open administrator command line and run the following command line:

Code:
Reg Add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps" /f

Reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps" /V DumpFolder /t REG_SZ /D "C:\CrashDumps" /f

MD C:\CrashDumps

Reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps" /V DumpType /t REG_DWORD /D 2 /f

Reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps" /V DumpCount /t REG_DWORD /D 10 /f

Reboot, there will be dump files created in C:\Crashdumps if the explorer crashed next time. The following may be useful to open a crash dump file.

This guide will walk you through opening, analyzing and making sense of Windows crash dump files.

Would I have to have a pagefile? Or is there a dedicated dump file?

"However, the reason to configure the page file size hasn't changed. It has always been about supporting a system crash dump, if it's necessary, or extending the system commit limit, if it's necessary. For example, when a lot of physical memory is installed, a page file might not be required to back the system commit charge during peak usage. The available physical memory alone might be large enough to do this. However, a page file or a dedicated dump file might still be required to back a system crash dump." For dump file you may need page file you can also use ProcDump to capture memory application dump files.

It’s more than likely a power issue.
i tried this and it seems to be working (it has been transferring large files for 20 minutes and hasn't disconnected yet). It still does the weird transfer speed falling to 0 thing, but it waits a while and then comes back. I wonder what causes that.

edit: lol right after i said that it disconnected. well, it lasted longer this time

This makes it seem something is wrong with the drive. It says "paging operation" so that makes me think pagefile on the OS drive. Pagefile is not big enough or is fragmented?

buffer is loaded in the beginning so the burst of speed is temporary.
good to know that worked more-so than other attempts. now i'm 95% sure its power. especially since you stated ssds dont have that issue... but they require way less power than a disk

Does it happen on SSDs? Did you run scandisk on your OS drive?

A long time ago I had to get a USB splitter cable to power an external HDD. It had one end that plugged into the drive, then 2 ends that plugged into 2 USB ports to give it the necessary power. One USB port didn't have enough to power a harddrive.

Or just a powered usb hub

I don't know. I think it was that no USB port, even from a hub, could supply enough power. It was over 10 years ago.
