Restarting explorer messes up a lot of things. It shuffles the order of my windows on my taskbar and it brought "people" back on the taskbar, and my weather widget is gone from the taskbar. The only way to fix everything is reboot the pc.

Scanning for hardware changes on device manager allows for the drive to be recognized again, but the transfer speed crawls to zero, comes back a bit, drops back to zero and fail.

ok, unsure if this is the same thing, but it throws me tons of warnings that all say this. some say related warnings that i think are as a result. no errors

I wonder if you have a corrupted pagefile or a bad sector on a disk. Maybe run scandisk?

How is your pagefile set?

I usually set a static size (except now I have it turned off). But ordinarily I'd do something like 8000 min and 8000 max, then click set. It depends how much of your drive you want to reserve for pagefle.

Do you have any other usb drives connected? Or a powered enclosure you can test with?

Also, go into device manager and check usb power settings

I'm about to sleep so I'll answer this tomorrow but I have three external drives, every time I have run scan disk in the past they have come back completely fine, and they all have the same issue when I try to do this. I bought a new one and it does the same thing. It starts only after I try to do a transfer. When I do a device scan it fixes it, but then when I do a transfer the errors start again.

And, I have a thumb drive. Can I test w/ that?

This makes it seem something is wrong with the drive. It says "paging operation" so that makes me think pagefile on the OS drive. Pagefile is not big enough or is fragmented?

I guess it could be power if windows is trying to send data from memory to a usb drive that is not getting enough power.

"If a generic error occurs when your computer pages information to or from the disk, an Event ID 51 event message is logged. In a paging operation, the operating system either swaps a page of memory from memory to disk, or retrieves a page of memory from disk to memory. It's part of the memory management of Windows." I have done no registry edit to my main Windows 11 system.

Install chipset driver to see it helps.

That was first driver I installed from gigabyte when I set up windows.

I could reproduce the problem on any computer with any version of windows.

It happens often when I backup pics from my phone. I open 4 windows: D, E, DCIM folder on phone, and micro sd card on phone. I copy pics and videos from DCIM to D, E, then SD card. Then delete original. Before I can finish, explorer will crash. Happens on win7 and win11. It could be icon cache filling up because I use extra large icons so I can see what is on the videos in order to know where to copy them. But I don't understand how changing the cache to 8mb will help because my thumbnail cache is 800mb. My icons are thumbnails.
