And the vendor's drivers were crap or the NIC is crap or both.

I've got it fixed (crossing everything) as it's survived three reboots, two startups and a partridge in a pear tree.

This morning couldn't get the uninstall/ reinstall of the drivers to work at all. Still poor speeds.
So I removed ALL of the drivers via Rapr. Rebooted then used @Brink's registry frig to stop driver updates. So it was now just using the baked in driver that's not showing in Rapr. Most probably will have to do the same routine in Canary after every update no doubt. Still to do in the RTM version. Thanks for sticking with this. Vey helpful of you.

Just an update to this issue.

The above 'fix' works but it entails rebooting all the time so more of a bodged job.
This started when I got a new router (Hub2) from my ISP when I got FTTP. This router won't allow to two SSIDs to differentiate between 5 and 2.4 GHz bands for some obscure reason so the device picks the band automatically.
What was happening was this ASUS with the crappy Realtek NIC (single antenna) was selecting the 2.4 GHz band and that was being affected by the Realtek Bluetooth wireless.

Found this out by temporarily disabling the 2.4 band in the router. Speeds were good again with the latest Realtek drivers. Obviously had to enable the 2.4 band again.

So in the WLAN card's advanced properties disabled 802.11d (stops wireless mode going back to auto) and under wireless mode selected IEEE 802.11a/n/ac forcing the card on to 5GHz.
It survives rebooting and cold booting.
