Intel Driver & Support Assistant Installed microsoft windows desktop runtime 8.0 14 x86.

Since I uninstalled the Support Assistant
Is there any reason to uninstall the runtime 8.0 14 x86?
Is there any reason to keep it?

The reason I installed (and then uninstalled) the Support Assistant is because I was checking out Snappy Driver just to see what it suggested. It says I have 69 drivers to update and a lot of them were Intel chipset drivers for my motherboard. For confirmation I checked with Intel which said there are no updates for my motherboard for Win-7 or 11

Snappy Driver shows the same 69 drivers when I run it on Windows 7 and 11 so I will uninstall Snappy Driver and not recommend it.

Is there a better way to check for updated drivers in general? I almost never update drivers unless there's an issue or Gigabyte or NVIDIA has the updates

PLEASE do not use 3rd party driver utilities. You're only asking for trouble.

If you want to check for the latest drivers for KEY components (mobo, gpu, sound card) for your desktop, go to the website of the OEM or your computer manufacturer (for laptops, just go the website of the laptop manufacturer).

Intel chipset "drivers" are just .inf files there are no .sys files they are not drivers. SDI might think there are some more optimal descriptions for device manager to display so it offers them if you want them. Makes no difference to the functionality.

SDI is by far the best of those utilities. There are two versions the original by Glenn Delahoy is here Snappy Driver Installer Origin – Glenn's Page

I'm sure you didn't mean for your post to suggest that the chipset driver is unimportant.

Depends if the yellow bangs bother you. It will get rid of those and put descriptions in device manager.

Yes and no. The chipset driver allows your system to communicate with the OS AND recognize and interpret the installation and purpose of other drivers and utilize them properly. The chipset driver is actually critical. I'm sure SIW2 didn't mean to imply otherwise.

If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. It will invariably only end in tears.

I'm in the camp where I recommend to only download driver updates directly from the website and not via an app. I've have a very few cases where the wrong driver was identified by the driver app and it has caused system issues -- very few, but enough to tell people to not rely on them.

YMMV, but it's my recommendation.

Back to the original question. Most .NET apps don't require .NET 8 Runtime in order to operate. A few do, but most expect to use .NET 4 for the widest compatibility. And the rest of them will include a .NET installer just in case you don't have their version of .NET.

Keeping the Runtime means it takes up about 55 MB of space. It doesn't hurt to keep it.

But I would uninstall it because it's the x86 version. Most apps that would need a Runtime are probably x64 today, or have a 64-bit version.

In my experience, most devs write apps using .NET 4 or 5 because those are supported on the most Windows platforms (W7 and up). The newer .NET frameworks are only available for recent Windows, which limits where your app can run.

Some fancy apps, like ImageGlass, will demand .NET 8 in order to function. It makes life better for the dev (easier to write code), but not so helpful to you. So apps requiring .NET 6 thru 10 are probably the exception, rather than the norm.

What's even more confusing (well it's Windows), is there's a different set of .NET versions for UWP (or Store) apps. This .NET only works for UWP apps, and they have nothing to do with .NET 4 or .NET Desktop Runtimes.
