DRIVES DISAPPEARING UNDER HEAVY LOAD


On another PC here I just moved Forza 5 (178GB) from a Samsung M2 drive to a Samsung SATA SSD

All working fine here.

My WD Blue drive would've been bricked by this update. It affects nVME drives with a Phison controller.

Per this link @Ghot posted, it It looks like Samsung NVMe drives aren't affected (at least not here). Also my 4TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD drive doesn't seem to be affected as I just dropped a 14TB game (Skyrim) and an 88TB game (The Division 2) on the drive and it never disappeared or caused any errors.

Side note: I like Jay, but his propensity to turn a 5-minute topic into a rambling two or three times longer video is really a turn off.

Well, Microsoft says that's not an Update. You might have to look elsewhere for the bogeyman. I did my own testing with several 350GB image files and could force no failures on four different SSD brands.

I write a 210 GB image every night before shutting down and there are no problems.

In four years of updating three Windows 11 Pro computers every patch Tuesday, I've never had any errors or problems.

In 30 years of fixing/repairing windows computers, I can't think of any time where an update didn't break something for somebody.

Microsoft doesn't always tell truth. If they admitted the problem I've witnessed with my own eyes, they'd have no defense in the inevitable lawsuits.

I ran a bunch of 64 GiB writes and no crash. (Samsung 990 Pro 1 TB with heatsink built-in)

First, the guy could not replicate the problem that has been reported. Second, he ran into a different problem, and this guy with 300 drives in his arsenal on the hardware side was unable to test it on the software side with a version of Windows that didn't include the update, i.e. he didn't have a system image to restore from the before times or even another computer that predates the update. He did find that one of his 300 drives that uses a different controller didn't exhibit the problem on the same system, but he didn't try another drive with the same controller, which is an obvious thing to do. From this, he concluded that "The update breaks the controller like everyone has been saying, and it's even worse than we thought". There's a quote from the movie "Billy Madison" that comes to mind.
