DRIVES DISAPPEARING UNDER HEAVY LOAD

First, the guy could not replicate the problem that has been reported. Second, he ran into a different problem, and this guy with 300 drives in his arsenal on the hardware side was unable to test it on the software side with a version of Windows that didn't include the update, i.e. he didn't have a system image to restore from the before times or even another computer that predates the update. He did find that one of his 300 drives that uses a different controller didn't exhibit the problem on the same system, but he didn't try another drive with the same controller, which is an obvious thing to do. From this, he concluded that "The update breaks the controller like everyone has been saying, and it's even worse than we thought". There's a quote from the movie "Billy Madison" that comes to mind.
But he has served his purpose. More than 500k views.

I blame JayzTwoCents. It was a holiday weekend and the guy pretends to have a life so, instead of running more tests, he took some time off. That's it then, he is a lazy effer. For his punishment, I suggest we all go to this stupid channel and start calling him LayzTwoCents. Like, RIGHT NOW!!! 💪

i was reading about this on reddit, someone posted research form over seas that MS distributed the update with the wrong driver file. MS updated the update files with the correct driver the following week. I cant source it so take it with a grain of salt. MS surely would not admit to such a "mistake".

Found this theory
Nah, I don't think so.

The discrepancy between the file version and the product version of ntfs.sys is a quirk rooted in Windows' versioning history and legacy compatibility. The "6.2" in the file version refers to the internal versioning used by certain system components that date back to Windows 8. Microsoft introduced Windows 8 with a kernel version of 6.2, and many low-level system files—especially drivers like ntfs.sys—retained this versioning for compatibility with older APIs and tooling. Even as Windows evolved to 10.0 and beyond in its product branding, some core components did not update their file version prefix, especially if their internal architecture remained largely unchanged.

The product version reflects the Windows 11 24H2 build lineage, which is based on build 26100. Microsoft chose to retain the 10.0 kernel version across Windows 10 and Windows 11 for consistency and compatibility. This helps avoid breaking older applications, drivers, and enterprise tools that rely on version checks. Even though Windows 11 introduces new features, UI changes, and architectural improvements (e.g., Rust integration in kernel components), the underlying NT kernel version remains 10.0.xxxxx.xxxx. This versioning is used for user-facing identification, update tracking, and system diagnostics.

So in short: "6.2" is a vestige of Windows 8's kernel versioning, still lingering in the shadows of modern Windows builds. It doesn't indicate a problem, it's just a legacy breadcrumb—one of many in Windows' sprawling versioning ecosystem.

i understand that. but its suggesting MS sent the update out with 6.2 instead the 10.0x version which caused the failures.

I think what we really need it more tinfoil hats on the market.

Yesterday I left the computer running copying a 250GB file around through two internal NVMe drives on my computer to two external USB NVMe drives in enclosures for several hours. The file was copied round-robin around between the four drives eight times total. When the batch job ended, I did a binary compare of the final copy with the original and it compared perfectly. The four drives are four different brands, two 2TB internal drives and two 4TB external drives. I have done nothing to remote the "offending" update, never did. The KB5063878 was installed on 8/12/2025 and there have been no issues using any/all of the drives and files since them.

do they have Phison controllers on those drives? Not all Phison controllers are affected just certain ones from what i gathered.

Just re-installed Forza Horizon on another PC here, all 178GB copied without problems and the drive is working
I'd know if it wasn't as it's the system drive

do they have Phison controllers on those drives? Not all Phison controllers are affected just certain ones from what i gathered.
Some of the problems were supposedly happening to non-Phison based SSD drive and even some HDD models. I honestly don't have the time or energy to track down what specific controller is used in the different drives I have, I have half a dozen brands and models in use. I repeated the copy test around on the four internal drives on my backup computer, and after eight round trips, the end result was a file that was an exact binary match for the original source file. That's a test of a total of eight SSD drives copying a 250GB file for eight trips through four drives without any issues. I'm done testing, I'm putting this whole story behind me.

Well local experiences in this thread topic aren't enough. The independent tech press (beyond Phison and MS press releases) needs to get in on it and say that the original announcement was a mistake, or fake news, or whatever... and that there's nothing to worry about. 🤨

Put everybody's mind at rest.

I'd rather that someone just tell us the unvarnished truth, whatever that is. :-) I'm pretty convinced that I don't have the issue, but then I'm just a sample of one.

Hard to say, I have never seen a definitive reason for what may be happening or exactly what environment it happens in. The indited players have disavowed any blame, so where do you look now?

Could it be do with what's actually being written to the disks? A few mentioned they were downloading an update to COD and another game
Could the downloads themselves be the problem rather than the size of the files?

I have one of the drives in the list: XPG SX8200 Pro (Silicon Motion SM2262). After I watched JayzTwoCents' first video last week I uninstalled the problem Windows update. I haven't had any problems so I guess I will never know whether I would have had a problem.
