easiest way to rip a song off a dvd? not a commercial product. We made it years ago ourself.

I was given a DVD from family and want to get the family song into some kind of song file.

If it will play in your computer you could use audacity.

or a program like DVDfab

Windows media player will even do it for you

Why not just play the DVD with VLC or whatever and capture the sound -- I think something like total recorder would do it -- or simply output the audio (via analog e.g headphone socket on a laptop) from the computer / laptop into any recording device - even a phone would do if it can record -- most do have a recording function -- for iPhones and latest Samsungs use a usbc>standard input connector. There's also usbc>headphone connectors available too so use the right one -- input to phone not output from phone.

OK you'd have to do this in "real time" but it's a one off and in any case you can just skip forward to the bits of audio you want.

For unprotected DVD-V discs, you can use the free SurroundByUs AudioMuxer 0.9.6.5 to extract audio streams.

For DVD-A discs, foobar2000 with the DVD-Audio Decoder and Watermark Detector plugin still works.
(Alternatively, you can use the 30-day free trial of DVD Audio Extractor.)

I used DVD Fab, but also see it is limited version.
I tried audacity but was not obvious what to do.

It is a video-audio DVD.
This is a one off event, probably.

I extracted to MP4 and the quality between DVD and Mp4 looks the same to me.

I then emailed it to my son in law, it is a video of his grandfather singing and playing guitar from the early 80's.
And he died couple weeks ago, and they had played this video at his memorial service.
I used gmail, attached file, then google said it would go to my google drive, I then shared it with anyone who has the link, so other people can watch it.
