This feature is available in Firefox settings. Is there a way to get this feature in Edge? Google search returned workarounds, but I don't want to install an extension, or resort to keyboard tricks for what should be a basic browsing feature. Even Internet Explorer had it built in.

This is from Firefox settings:

This I know. I'm asking about while browsing, not when starting the browser.
When I right-click a link and then select "open in new tab", I want to switch to that tab immediately, without having to click on the actual tab.

Firefox doeas this as a matter of course.

Thanks for the advice. I will just continue to use Firefox in the meantime until Edge makes it as easy.
I like using Edge, but this is one of those little things I am so used to that I find browsing without it a little frustrating.

I solved it by programing one of the buttons on my mouse (the middle button). If your mouse has it's own available software you can use that, but I've used X-Mouse button control for years. X-Mouse Button Control
I have just a standard 3 button tilt wheel mouse. Left and right mouse buttons are default. Tilt wheel left=back, tilt wheel right=close, Middle button opens link in new tab. It works great.

Why not Shift/Middleclick???
Great solution for me.
Generally I prefer to middle click the link and stay where I am and read the new tab subsequently, this offers a simple solution when the opposite is wanted(y)
