My wife's HP Envy 17t-cr100 laptop has a BIOS update available. I had similar issue last year but got lucky at some point. It appears as if the 100MB EFI partition that Windows creates is not large enough to facilitate HP BIOS updates. I have tried several methods with no success. 1) Is there a safe way to increase the size of the EFI partition? There is a 16MB MSR between it and my C: drive that prevents a direct extension. Likewise, I read that deleting that 16MB partition might result in consequences. 2) In the future, how can I tell Windows to create a larger EFI during install? Any other thoughts on how to do the BIOS update? I should've been able to do it using a created HP BIOS recovery disk and UEFI Diagnostics...but there is no option for "firmware management" anymore. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...I tried the gparted method. It worked on my desktop computer (test) but when I tried it on my wife's HP, it ended up unbootable. Windows install media bcdboot commands were unsuccessful as were "automatic repair." I ended up using Hasleo to restore machine back. I'll try again later this week.

I have extended an efi partition only one time. Luckily the imaging software I use (Macrium) allows me to resize partitions easily during an image restore. I
do not know if Haselo has such a feature or not. You would have to check its instruction manual to see if it does. Not many imaging softwares do AFIK.

Another great tool for resizing partitions is Minitool Partition Wizard. It's offline bootable media can handle most anything thrown at it.

Still another option is to update your bios from a usb flash drive. This does not require any space on the EFI partition so no resizing is necessary.

HP BIOS Update via USB (No EFI Partition Needed)

1. Prepare a USB Drive
  • Use a small USB stick (4–16 GB is fine).
  • Format it as FAT32.

2. Download the BIOS Update
  1. Go to HP Support.
  2. Enter your laptop/desktop model or serial number.
  3. Download the latest BIOS update (usually a .exe file).

3. Extract the BIOS Files to USB
  • Run the downloaded .exe.
  • It will ask whether to update now or create recovery media.
  • Choose Create USB BIOS Recovery Media (or similar wording).
  • Select your FAT32 USB drive.
  • This copies the .bin or .sig BIOS file onto the USB.

4. Boot into HP BIOS
  • Insert the USB drive.
  • Restart your PC and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Go to:
Advanced → Firmware Management → BIOS Update
(names can vary slightly depending on HP model).

5. Flash the BIOS
  • Select Update BIOS using USB.
  • Choose the file on the USB stick.
  • Confirm and let it update.
⚠️ Don’t power off during this step! Your system may reboot several times.

6. Done

After the update, your PC will reboot into Windows with the new BIOS.
This is the the safest fallback if resizing makes you nervous.

My BIOS doesn't have a firmware management or BIOS update option. Neither in the BIOS itself or the HP Diagnostics option. Earlier today I figured out how to view the HP files in the EFI partition. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to move them or delete them. I attempted a EFI partition extension again and, for whatever reason, it worked this time. It is now 500MB. I was finally successful in updating the BIOS.
