System Enable or Disable Automatic Maintenance to Wake Up Computer in Windows 11

  • Staff
Reliability_Monitor_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable allowing Automatic Maintenance to wake up the computer to run scheduled maintenance tasks in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows automatically runs scheduled maintenance on a daily schedule when you're not using your computer.

This includes tasks such as updates, security scanning, and system diagnostics. This maintenance will run daily if you aren't using your computer at 2 AM by default. If your computer is in use at the scheduled time or maintenance is behind schedule, Automatic Maintenance will run the next time the computer is not being used.

You can change the default 2 AM time to run daily maintenance tasks to when you're not using your computer while running or sleeping.

You can allow scheduled maintenance to wake up your computer at the scheduled time if wanted. This will not work when you shut down (turn off) the computer.

Reference:

You must be signed in as an administrator to change Automatic Maintenance settings.

Shawn this tutorial caught my eye. It does not mention Modern Standby and its implications, like the network being disabled on some devices during full idle. I assume, and I know I shouldn't, if you enable you still have to enable network. On my device the checkmark box is actually greyed out. Maybe your tutorial about enabling network should be in "Related Tutorials" section.

Hello Ken, :-)

If the computer is in "Sleep" or "Modern Standby" mode, Automatic Maintenance should be able to wake the computer at the scheduled time to perform the scheduled maintenance.

The only time you need an Internet connection with Automatic Maintenance is for the task that checks for updates, otherwise it'll get skipped and performed later.

But isn't updates one of the reasons to do at when not busy (2:00). Downloads on slow rural internet is available and the first phase of the install takes place.

Even including that if want updates checked please enable network.

Just thought I would mention. Take care.

Network connections are enabled by default in standby, so unless it's a metered connection or manually disabled, it should have a connection.

The main thing is allowing wake up timers for then the PC is in Sleep or Modern Standby mode.

Not sure but I know I can use your tutorial.

My initial comment about a tip is simple to say some sort of heads up. Like if your machine uses modern standby, check your network status by running powercfg. Anyway this conversation will alert people to possible pitfalls.

Thank again. Take care

I wanted to join this conversation. I too noticed the grey option in the automatic maintenance menu. Does it means something? I have 3 machines running Win 11 and the option is grayed on all machines. Does Microsoft want to get rid of this feature? Note: I cleaned install win 11 pro from scratch.

Used the registry key to activate wakeUp (option 2) The key is there, but still no check and the grayed option... And what is the difference between opt 2 and opt 4?

Hello, and welcome. :alien:

It looks like something has changed.

For now, make sure Allow wake times below is enabled.

You can then use option two with a REG file instead of option one to manually Check (on) or uncheck (default - off) Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time even though this setting will still be grayed out.

Option four sets the same policy as option three.

Thank you for your quick response. I'm doing a test for 9 PM Still strange because when I'm doing "powercfg -wake_timers" There is nothing even if I used the reg file. The wake timers are activated. I think it may not work but let's see...

Well, it is way more complicated that I previously thought. Since modern standby is not sleeping, I believe this is not required anymore therefore greyed the "wake" option. This being said, I noticed strange behavior on my PC without modern standby.

The tasks inside the folder "Task scheduler" vanished without a trace. I am not sure why yet. Do you still have those tasks?

Okay. Woke up this morning motivated. Did another clean install from scratch with modern stanby disabled from the bios because I noticed earlier that a wake timer was there and then vanished too after some time (I have no idea why). Found out "Maintenance Activator". It's bothering for a while now. Last year, I purchased a PC that I didn't used until months later. I used S4 on that PC because S0 is annoying. (Usually, I set S0 for 60 minutes then S4). That PC did its maintenance beautifuly until I did some updates or something else then also, the wake timer disappered.

Of course I went here to see if I could do something to make it back. The "allow computer to wake" check was also greyed (because modern stanby was on that PC). I also looked for the folder "Task Scheduler" and found nothing. I supect nothing above will work anymore because Microsoft decided to change their approach.

I told myself that if I could locate this strange task, maybe I could toggle back on the "allow computer to wake". I am not sure where this task is located and can't find it in the task scheduler to the best of my knowledge... Any clue? Am I wrong? The only thing I know so far is that even if I check the option (when it's available) or play in the registry, no wake timer will appear and the maintenance will never happen until I manually wake the PC .

Also, that wake timer is there even if the option is unchecked:

@orbitalfenestra,

I checked, and the "Task Scheduler" folder is empty for me as well.

Odd thing is that Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time is no longer grayed out for me with no changes made other than enabling "Allow wake timers". Possibly a restart afterwards ungrayed it.

Googling that specific "Maintenance Activator" task didn't give me much except for this surprisignly old thread:

[REMOVED BY ADMIN]

The guy tried to explain it but people seemed confused about it:

"Just to confirm, you were looking for "Maintenance Activator" and not Automatic Maintenance? (I'm not familiar with Maintenance Activator, so I just wanted to make sure that's what it's suppose to be)"

One guy pointed Diagnosis\Scheduled in the task manager claiming it was "an anomaly" . Found that task and its description seems relevant:

"The Windows Scheduled Maintenance task periodically performs maintenance on the computer's system by automatically fixing problems or reporting them through Security and Maintenance."

But still... in that task, the "wake up computer" option is not activated. Still have a wake timer for "Maintenance Activator".

Is there any way to locate "Maintenance Activator" task?
