This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the delay of running startup apps at Windows startup for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Startup apps are the apps that start automatically when you sign in to Windows 11.

You can have any app, shortcut, folder, drive, file, script, etc.. items automatically open or run at startup.

By default, Windows will run the items in your Startup folder (shell:startup) after about a 10 second delay at Windows startup when you sign in to your account. This was done to help improve the performance of Windows startup. If you have a fast computer, then you may wish to disable this startup delay to have your startup items run as soon as you sign-in instead of delayed.

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (enable) or step 3 (disable) below for what you would like to do.

2 Enable Delay of Running Startup Apps

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Enable_Startup_delay_for_current_user.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Serialize]
"Startupdelayinmsec"=-
"WaitForIdleState"=-

3 Disable Delay of Running Startup Apps

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Disable_Startup_delay_for_current_user.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Serialize]
"Startupdelayinmsec"=dword:00000000
"WaitForIdleState"=dword:00000000

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 If you have Smart App Control turned on, you will need to unblock the downloaded REG file.

6 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

7 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

8 You could now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

I supply a new laptop to a customer perhaps once a week and was doing exactly that a couple of days ago.

The laptop is a 13th Gen i5 8gb Lenovo machine and the customer has all files located in OneDrive. The laptop boots in a flash with a fresh 25H2 installation and it's usually a pleasurable task to supply a machine and impress with the performance of their new device.

30 minuites into my demonstration and I am saying something's wrong with OneDrive and eventually I am telling the customer I will have to take the laptop back to base to reload it. OneDrive it taking up to 2 minuites to launch on every boot which means we cant open any files for those 2 minuites.

8 hours of dissecting OneDrive, looking for file corruption, reinstalling 25H2, trying other OneDrive revisions and I finally find out that Microsoft have devised an automatic app startup delay. I used what seems to be the current fix which is to add DWORD WaitForIdleState Value 0 to the Serialize key and OneDrive launches immediately after Defender.

I deal with many machines and this is the first time I have seen this automatic delay cause a problem perhaps as not many of my customers are totally OneDrive file based. Apparently this has been an issue for over a year. I'm not overly impressed with looking like an idiot when a customer is spending out on a new laptop and I would think the customer has some doubts about the purchase. I'm also not to keen on supplying a new machine with a modified registry.

I had the similiar problem when i first installed 25H2, adding WaitForIdleState DWORD with Value 0 fixed my problem.

Thank you so much, I was already very frustated after buying a new system.
The delay of 2 or 3 minutes before loading OneDrive was driving me crazy.
Why Microsoft?

Although I am not a user of OneDrive, I appreciate these tweaks and hearing the results of these performance tweaks.

Thank you 🙏
