Hi

Must be a system corruption in your setup .

I use services.msc all the time and have no problem in latest update .194
Either cap "S" or small "s" first letter will work.
Typed in "run" (?)

Cheers

In windows 10 sometimes it was caused by any corrupted file. Running SFC /scannow also helps.

Can't replicate the problem on either of my Dev channel test PCs. As the other posters suggest, there may be issues in your local environment. MS urges people to run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth first, then sfc /scannow second. FWIW, I concur. If that double-whammy doesn't do the job, an in-place repair install could help.
HTH,

Does the issue only occur with the services snap-in, or do you have same problem with other snap-ins too? For example, can you launch eventvwr.msc (Event Viewer) in the same way?

Hi All,
First, I would like to say Thank you to everyone for their suggestion.
The Windows 11 version (OS Build 22000.194) that I have installed is the Beta channel build.
I have tried the repairs:
sfc /scannow
and read the output log
sfclogs.txt
I have run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Output: says 100% ok
eventvwr.msc (Event Viewer) works just fine.

If I drill down through the nested folders to the services.msc
In C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ services.msc
And run this one it works OK?
If I run this one: C:\Windows\System32\ services.msc
I get the error which you have seen in the previous screenshot.
This is the file windows runs when I type it in on the command prompt or on the search bar?
I was wondering if windows is a bit mixed up and running the wrong service.msc file ?

syswow64 is a location related to the running of 32 Bit executables on a 64 bit windows system.

Your OS should (assuming it's a 64Bit OS) be using the standard executables, DLLs, etc whereas a 32 Bit OS looks in the syswow64 folder structure for the 32Bit equivalents

The following is an explanation Older link but well written and still useful

Although I have never personally seen this system failing It would appear that you are using a 32bit OS and the correct link(s) are missing or pointing incorrectly to the 64 bit executable, this can happen occasionally I believe at the first install point of an application so the links are made incorrectly.

If you are on a 64 Bit system there is even more wrong or the same issue has happened but in reverse

As we are still discussing a pre release software a reinstall may be the best option (though there is evidence that 22000.194 is the RTM release version)

It's a 64 bit system
Yes my understanding is that the 22000.194 is the RTM.
I have spent a lot of time installing apps, so reluctant to do a clean uninstall/install
I should be able to fix it.
If all else fails, I will go with Ed Tittel suggestion, ( in-place repair install )
as I have tried everything else..
PC is Imaged!!

If it is just this one item that's causing the issue I would myself just create a shortcut to the working item and replace the shortcut that's in the start menu if possible - or just place it somewhere I could find it and use it until the official RTM drops and do the update from that -

if the issue still remains then you can use the RTM for the Inplace update as Ed suggested

Just me - but I try to avoid work at the Beta to RTM phase as much as possible as there are usually other things that will come to light once we have the running RTM - and often a few that are caused by the RTM process

Cheers, barman58,
I think I will take your advice.
As you say, I might sort this out then another thing might crop
Up. It was just niggling me, because it wasn’t right,
and I was been a bit inpatient.
It will get sorted in the end!

One suggestion I found on the Internet is to delete the CLSID from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns, and let Windows create another entry on next boot.

See here for more details:

If you want to try it, you are strongly advised to make a backup of your system before attempting.
