Hi I need help, I cannot install the latest Windows Cumulative Update from patch Tuesday, I have deleted C:\Winows\Softwaredistribution\Dowload and stopped Norton auto protect and smart firewall. Anyone any suggestions?

I was having this exact same problem. SFC and DISM were showing no problems so after several unsuccessful attempts I ran the Disk Cleanup app and selected "Clean up system files". After I ran that I retried the download and subsequent install and it worked.

A lot of people are having trouble with that WU it seems. The easiest way to get it and correct the errors is to do a repair install by going into settings/system/recovery select fix Problems Using Windows Update and hit the Reinstall Now button. That will repair and take you to build 6899 while preserving all your apps, settings, and customizations.

You can always try running the windows troubleshooter it does a decent job fixing issues with Windows Update

For some earlier problematic updates, I had success going to Microsoft and downloading the specific update and manually applying it. I didn't have to do that with this one, but it's worth a shot.

I believe these are cumulative, I know you don't always have to install every patch in order. From the size of it, I suspect it'll work fine. If it needs the previous build, it will not install.

@FrancoDT Thanks, I will try that, I tried the sfc and dism followed by the disk cleanup as suggested by others, It went all the way this time to installing 100% and then hung, I had to try to restart the computer which went to updates are underway and it hung again, so I turned it off and on and now the update as completely disappeared from the main update screen and there is nothing in history any more. so I think I may leave it until the next update and see what happens, thanks to all

I reckon if it is affecting a lot of people MS will bring out a fix or something ( fingers crossed )

That repair install will solve the update problems 95% of the time. Speaking from personal experience by the way having had to use it on two machines three and four times now in Jul, Aug, and Sep lol. WU have been giving people fits the last few months. Good luck with your issues.

@FrancoDT Thank you, That was the fix. I did it the first time and it failed, so I went through all the crap as I did before and it worked second time, but it did change a lot of things with OpenShell and custom recycle bin and battery mode all had to be changed, All is fine now. Thank you so much.

That's the disadvantage with customizations. They are not always retained when installing a cumulative update or upgrade to a new version and we need to do them again.

This worked for me as well. I found it much faster to download the Media Creation Tool instead of downloading the ISO. MUCH faster!
