When restarting my PC tries to connect to the Net via WiFi. This is annoying since I have an Ethernet connection direct to the Router. Appears to only have occurred since latest update (see above). My solution is to to turn the WiFi settings to off.
Is there a way that I can Leave WiFi on but have the machine recognize Ethernet by default?

Copilot says to do it like this:

Yes, you can prioritize a wired Ethernet connection over Wi-Fi in Windows 11. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Open Control Panel: Type "Control Panel" in the Windows search bar and hit Enter.
  2. Network and Sharing Center: Navigate to "Network and Sharing Center."
  3. Change Adapter Settings: Click on "Change adapter settings" on the left sidebar.
  4. Ethernet Properties: Right-click on your Ethernet connection and select "Properties."
  5. Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4): Select this option and click on "Properties."
  6. Advanced Settings: Click on "Advanced" and uncheck "Automatic metric."
  7. Set Interface Metric: Enter a lower number (e.g., 10) for the Ethernet connection. This gives it higher priority.
  8. Wi-Fi Properties: Repeat the steps for your Wi-Fi connection, but enter a higher number (e.g., 20) for the Interface metric.
By setting a lower metric number for the Ethernet connection, Windows will prioritize it over Wi-Fi whenever both are available2.

If you prefer using PowerShell, you can also change the network adapter priorities with the following commands:

  1. Open PowerShell as an administrator.
  2. Run the command Get-NetIPInterface to list all network adapters and their interface index numbers.
  3. Use the command Set-NetIPInterface -InterfaceIndex "XX" -InterfaceMetric "YY" to set the priority, where XX is the interface index and YY is the desired metric.
This should ensure that your device always uses the wired Ethernet connection when it’s available. If you need more detailed instructions, you can find them here.

Hope this helps!

Geez: imagine that! Copilot actually scores from time to time.
It looked good to me, too -- or I wouldn't have inflicted it on a fellow ElevenForum.com member.
Cheers!

If you're not using wi-fi, there's nothing wrong with turning it off. You just need to remember to turn it back on, should the wired Internet fail.
Cheers!

Does the interface metric even work any longer? I tried about a year ago to get this to work and simply could not get it to work. Spent hours and could not make it work. No matter what I did, Ethernet always won out even though technically at the time my WiFi was faster :-).

Well now that you mention it, I don't have a good candidate -- that is, a system with faster Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet -- to use as a basis for comparison. Here at Chez Tittel, all the systems running wired Ethernet (1 Gbps, which actually goes faster than that sometimes on PC's with 2.5 GbE NICs) run faster than the 802.11 ax that my Wi-Fi supports. Thus, I can't tell from direct experience that the priority scheme works. Perhaps the OP is indeed best served by simply disabling Wi-Fi (and re-enabling when it's needed).
Go figure!

Can you not uninstall the KB5052080 update (if that’s the update responsible) and hold out for the next one?
I am not an insider so I don’t know how it works.

    ...Where's my horse?
i use this method which seems to work for me.
set the Ethernet connection to all manual addressing
IP address
subnet mask
gateway address
DNS server addresses

settings > network > Ethernet > network settings
save all the manual addressing and leave the WiFi settings as they are on 'Auto'

restart the system.
the manual addressing for the Ethernet will take priority over the WiFi settings and should always connect first.
well it does on my Win11 system.

best of luck, Steve ..

Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters > YOUR_WiFi_Adapter > Right Click > Properties > Advanced
and set the following:

If that option isn’t available for you, we can use Task Scheduler to accomplish the same feat via powershell. Let me know.

My Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 adapter does not have many of the items you show, including Disable Upon Wired Connect. Goes off to check a newer PC ... dang! That's the only Wi-Fi adapter I've got around here, even on my two newest PCs.
Sigh.

I had to disable the WiFi for my desktop also. The 2.5Gb Ethernet connection is much faster than WiFi.

ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming WiFi II motherboard
Ethernet: Intel I225-V 2.5Gb
WiFi: 6E (2.4/5/6 GHz)

BTW, my Gateway has one 2.5Gb Ethernet port. That is what I am connected to. It also supports WiFi 6E.
