  • The first stable release of Euro-Office, an open-source office suite alternative, is out now.
  • Positioned as a cornerstone of EU digital sovereignty, it's not ready for prime time.
  • Opposition from other open-source parties isn't helping.

Doomed to failure from day 1 calling it Euro Office. It is so obviously a political stunt. There are already well know MS Office alternatives but they only have niche usage.

Why would any firm that wants to engage in international business ditch MS Office?

One might complain about MS Office but it has stood the test of time with very few catastrophic (if any) bugs. For businesses, that distinction matters.

And that basically concurs with my point. MS Office was always a business tool and back in the day, non business consumers often used simpler tools as they did not need such complexity.

Over time a number of Office clones developed and satisfied the needs of smaller domestic consumers - Libre Office being the prime example nowadays.

So I cannot see who the Euro Office targets. Major business users will remain with MS Office. Domestic users who wish to save money will stick with Libre Office or similar.

This is just political posturing with EU trying to break MS dominance. They will only achieve that if they actually make MS Office illegal or impose excessive tariffs. Think of the chaos if they tried to switchover every public sector organisation.

One only has to remember the spectaculary failed attempt by a German state to switch over to Linux from Windows and using various non Windows apps (MS Office being renoved as main app). The state admin fell apart in weeks, and they had to reverse the decision.

Tools introduced by politicians with a different agenda are a joke.
