Anybody know how to lock the Control Panel display to show small icons by default instead of just the eight categories?

Odd as mine after intially changing the setting always opens and shows all the icons - View by setting on the top right.

It very much depends on how you open Control Panel - and this is not just in 11, it behaves the same in 10.

If you have File Explorer open, then you choose Control Panel in its navigation pane it always opens in Category view.

If you open it from a shortcut, the Start menu, or pinned to the Taskbar, then it remembers your chosen view from the last time you opened it from a shortcut. So if you want the Large icons view or the Small icons view, then open it from Start, select that view, then close it. It will use that view every time you open it from then on, as long as you use a shortcut. You cannot fix its view if you open it in File Explorer, neither can opening it from File Explorer change how a shortcut opens.

So always open Control Panel from a shortcut, and remember not to select another view once you have opened it

Odd as mine after intially changing the setting always opens and shows all the icons - View by setting on the top right.

You open it from Start, don't you?

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

if it is from the navigation pane in file explorer, just create a custom shell location and pin it.. this can be done manually or with winaero tweaker. if it is just the shortcut in the start menu, mod the reg or change the gpo..

Desktop shortcut.
Yes, that would work too. Opening Control Panel from any shortcut, wherever it is (Desktop, Start, Taskbar, etc.) will remember the view from it was last opened.

Thank you all for your suggestions and explanations. I'm sure I can figure it out from here, but the thing is that I always open the CP from a shortcut that I pinned to the Start page (the 18-icon page, not the All apps list), and I'm not at all sure how I made that shortcut. Whatever the method was, I'm going to have to find another method.

Done and done. Whatever the method was that I used to make the Start shortcut originally, the standard method I just used to create a desktop shortcut worked from the desktop, and CP returned to its last used state (icons).

Then all I had to do was unpin the "bad" icon from Start, pin the new desktop icon to Start, and delete the desktop icon.

All good. Merci beaucoup. (That's French for "Have a good day, guys!")

I can't recall how I made my original Start shortcut to CP, but it wasn't the right way for my desired shortcut behavior. Now that I've created a desktop shortcut and pinned it in place of the original, all's well. Thanks, d.

(I hate it when members here who should know better needlessly reproduce the graphics in the posts they quote, so I don't.)

Thanks, Edwin (whose UI customizations always impress me). I discovered that fact from a careful, analytic look at Shawn's tutorial
Create Control Panel Shortcut in Windows 10
and the shortcuts he offered in that excellent short piece.

shell:::{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

@Edwin, please tell me what you call those strings that begin with shell:::
