General Open Control Panel in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to open the Control Panel and change to Category, Large icons, or Small icons view in Windows 11.

You can use Control Panel to change settings for Windows. These settings control nearly everything about how Windows looks and works, and you can use them to set up Windows so that it's just right for you.

When you open the Control Panel, you can select to view the Control Panel in either the Category, Large icons, or Small icons view.

The Control Panel is in the process of being deprecated in favor of the Settings app, which offers a more modern and streamlined experience.

While the Control Panel still exists for compatibility reasons and to provide access to some settings that have not yet migrated, you're encouraged to use the Settings app, whenever possible.

Option One

Open Control Panel from Search


1 Open Search (Win+S) or the Start menu.

2 Type Control Panel into the search box. (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on Open for Control Panel.

Option Two

Open Control Panel from File Explorer Navigation Pane


This option is only available if you turned on Show all folders for the navigation pane in File Explorer.


1 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

2 Click/tap on Control Panel in the left navigation pane. (see screenshot below)

Option Three

Open Control Panel from File Explorer Address Bar


1 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

2 Click/tap on the first arrow on the left side in the address bar. (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on Control Panel in the drop menu.

Option Four

Open Control Panel from Run


1 Open Run (Win+R).

2 Type control into Run, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

Open Control Panel from Command Line


1 Open the Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell console.

2 Type control into the console, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

Many people (like me) rely on the Control Panel on a regular basis, so why kill it?
I have a shortcut icon for it on my desktop display so I can access it more quickly.

While I agree with you on this also, I do see how others still need it.

I like the Windows Settings development, though, it's much nicer and easier to get around in, and finding things is getting better with every new build, too.

But even I find myself in CP once in a while.

Just right click control.exe and choose: Send To > Desktop create shortcut.
Then you can pin that shortcut to Start Menu or Taskbar, or just leave it on your Desktop.

I also do it for PS and Cmd Prompt (as Admin) and Calculator and WMP too.
I just get tired of trying to second guess where MS is hiding them... this time. :)

Almost forgot... Task Manager, too.

Left to right...

Search, WMP, AnyBurn, Karen's Replicator, WAU Manager, Autoruns, AIDA64, Revo, CCleaner, Macrium, PS, CMD Prompt, Calc, Task Manager, Zelda, MS Links 2003, Audacity, VLC, Control Panel, File Explorer and Firefox.

I also do it for PS and Cmd Prompt (as Admin) and Calculator and WMP too.
I just get tired of trying to second guess where MS is hiding them... this time. :)

I don't really like groups. I WANT things one click away.
That's the problem I have with the right click context menu right now.

Instead of just right clicking the desktop... no I have to do that and click "Show More Options" to get to the things I wanted in the 1st place.

For now, you can run the explorer windows in separate process (Explorer options/folder view/check the box), this will give you instant "more options", but MS will fix this soon. Probably.

What concerns me is, that this new look could be just some kind of overlay - this bug indicates so...

All I really care about is that MS just leaves the GUI like it is, and let's us choose a Win 10 Start Menu, and that they fix the right click on the desktop.
