Hi folks
Those who have access to the London Times or its online version TOL might like to read a small interesting article an Ms EXCEL - 40th Birthday. It's behind a paywall unfortunately but I'm sure some here do have access. Well worth it -- but it's amazing to read of people saying how it really hosed up some projects because of wrong data -- it's 100% NOT the software but the people using it !!!

Anyway a good read.

You are old when you used to use Visicalc before Lotus 123.

VisiCalc 1.x

VisiCalc was the first spreadsheet program for personal computers. It was extremely successful, and pivotal as it was significantly responsible for moving personal computing out of the realm of hobbyists and in to the realm of serious business tools.

PS Excel may be 40 years old but it did not become the dominant package until quite a few years later, overlapping with Lotus 123 for some years and eventually MS Office superseded Lotus 123.

I remember some companies holding on to Lotus 123 to the "bitter end" several years after Lotus 123 had gone to the Lotus Blossom fields in the sky.

The reason visicalc took the world by storm is that unlike all other programming tools to date, visicalc was the first programming tool that came up with a revolutionary genius solution i.e. the program input (and output) data was stored in the same file as the programming.

Previous computer programs had to read data from a file (or keyboard etc) and output to another file (or screen).

It makes me laugh when people say "I can't program, I use a spreadsheet"!

Even just entering two numbers in a spreadsheet and entering a formula to add them together IS programming albeit very simple to do.

How about in the early days of PC;s -- a company put out a program called "The Last One" which even in those early days said that A.I (which wasn't then even on the horizon) could have wiped up things before Google, Duckgogo and Elon Musk even got near.

My history with Excel is cringeworthy and embarrassing. I'm completely self taught with what little computer and software knowlege I have and never had a problem learning anything else in my entire life, especially when I was younger. Now bear in mind, I have never had any real need to use spreadsheets, so I've always used that as my excuse for all my failed attempts to understand how to use Excel. I mastered Word, Powerpoint, and Publisher on my own, no problem. I tried with Excel when I was young and several other times over the years as I aged. It just wouldn'd sink in for me. I...just...couldn't...get...it and never could understand my mental block since I was always able to dig out most anything else piece by piece until i got profficient enough to do what I needed or wanted to do.

One of my first tasks in my IT support career was to roll out Windows 95/MS Office 97 to all the users in a large business. For each user the first thing I did after upgrading their PC was to ask 'Are you a dog or a cat person?'. Depending of their answer I gave Clippy the boot and switched to Rocky or Links.
