In my endeavor to protect myself from my primary laptop suffering a critical fault or loss, I've kept a second laptop on hand. And in order to prevent it from tumbling too far out of date, I periodically make use of it so that Windows Updates will take place to keep it current.

While my 2nd laptop started with a clone of all user files from my primary laptop, it has deviated now... over the course of a couple of years. Now, the easiest thing I could do would be to perform a complete file list dump sorted by date, then trim off those files in the list that date from the time of copy. And using a little text editor utility that memorizes keystrokes, I could create a macro to then generate a batch file for copying those files to a flash drive.

My problem is that as part of my periodic use, I download files from the Internet. Mostly image and video, but also some documents. Those files are sometimes saved with the current date by the browser, but other times not. So... in essence I may have dozens of files that were obtained after my storage was cloned, with dates that could be earlier than that.

TLDR;
QUESTION: Is there a useful software utility available that does a good job of analyzing two target folders and conducting a comparison for duplicate files, then provide an option for deletion of said duplicate files? And can the filter criteria focus on not just the file name match but also the file size? Also, is there such a utility that does the opposite, finding unique files amidst a large cache of duplicate files?

Addendum: Yes, putting files in the cloud rather than storing locally would be a far more convenient choice of action, but in my frugal manner where I've enjoyed storing files for free I disdain putting large quantities of files in the cloud (I simply put my most critical files there, encrypted)

Hello, @cytherian.

Not sure this would be helpful in your situation, but perhaps you may be interested in having a look.

Simple duplicate file finder, CCleaner.

CCleaner DFC

If interested, I suggest the Free 'Portable' Version ~ CCleaner Builds Page

Good luck finding something suitable for your needs. (y)

So basically you'd use Windows Explorer at a root folder to traverse both folders containing possible duplicates, use some sort of filter (e.g. file extension) and then sort by date and size? With thousands of files, that could be very tedious to plow through eyeballing for duplicates. Or is there a further technique involved?

@WXC, thanks for the tip. I do have CC Cleaner, but hadn't seen the DFC. I'll have to check it out. Do you know if it has an option for the reverse, "unique file find" when comparing two sets of folders with mostly duplicates?

Hi, Cytherian.

To be perfectly honest, I could not say. Sorry.

Although I have ran CCleaner Portable for a long time, I think I have only utilized the Duplicate File Finder once, long ago.

I'm confident you know, but be careful not to touch any 'system files', should you try it.

Good luck.

I don't have many duplicates in the first place, older files are on archived storage or on multiple backups in various locations

If I wish to produce a redundant copy of a group of files or a folder tree I use my Backup software to create and manage the files on an external drive - the software will automatically synchronise the two file sets every time the drives are both available [This is also possible to setup for a pair of internal drives ]

Edit

A simple search for suitable software came up with this ... FreeFileSync now I'm not saying that this is the perfect solution for your requirements but bmay give an idea of what is possible / available - this is a freeware package so may be a little limited but may have the basis of a system to suit your needs

Oh yes. This is strictly user files. Because I like to have easy access to backed up files (not having to decompress a backup archive), I generally use Macrium Reflect to perform Windows system and user application backups, then leave the user file folders (documents, music, pictures, video, downloads) as a separate backup procedure. The duplicate file concern I'm wrestling with is only user files.

The duplicate file problem I have is not actually within a single computer itself... it's across two computers. My topic inquiry is probably misleading, now that I think about it. I'm aiming to set up a better file management practice between my two laptops. But before I even get there, I need to resolve user file differences between my two laptops.

I've kept all my files, documents, and pictures in OneDrive for many years. OneDrive keeps it all in real-time sync between all my computers, tablets, and phone.
Same here, but I have several folders in OneDrive. Is there a way to find duplicate files on OneDrive files stored in the cloud? i.e., the same file in different folders. CCleaner seems to work fine on external drives and files stored on a PC,

The system I use is part of the professional version of Aomei Backupper and I use it mostly to synchronise Images and Lightroom catalogues between my Laptop and Desktop when I travel I have an external drive that I carry with me and synchronise with the desktop before leaving and again when I arrive back - The software does the rest a simple case of connecting the drive to the two systems when required.

I don't think that the option is available in the free version of the software but there is probably a file synchronising software application or windows add-on that could do the job - everytime you connect the two systems either manually or automatically - you are probably best served to check out some software to synchronise files rather than find duplicates, as this would be a complete solution

Although I did say "preferably" free, I would be willing to pay for a utility if it's excellent and robust at a reasonable price ($30 or less). One of those things where it's a one-time payment and you've got it for years ahead (versus paying a subscription license).
Yes, synchronizing is the ultimate goal. In the meanwhile, I just need to find a minimally time consuming approach to get these two computers mirrored. I'll check into Aomei Backupper and see what options they offer. Thanks!

Directory Report can compare two directories for duplicate files and also tell if a file is in one directory and not the other
You can then copy missing files from one directory to the other

It can also find duplicate files and duplicate directories
