Hi folks
Liking W11 so far - very fast (OK I'm using a VM and only have base Windows) -- Activation OK (W7 old Technet key still works BTW) .

Themes installable, CPU usage on a VM low (mind you not doing much yet on it) new icons, networking seems OK too.

I needed to switch to SMB1 to access other older devices on LAN.

Only defect (liveable with unlike the case of W2K22 server trial) is that openssh -server won't install (from the add optional features) but I suppose that will get fixed in due course.

Now will mess around with Language settings and Office 2019 install

The size I used for initial install virtual disk was 40GB - might need to make a bit bigger.
If Office goes OK I'll fiddle around with optimising the VM -- so far it's running just OK.

Firefox is default browser I've switched to.

Reminder - if you want to install as a LOCAL account then ensure Internet is disconnected at initial setup.

With your own themes you can change the bright menu thing -- although I still wish the Windows bar could be moved back to LH edge of screen.

Updated - Thanks to tutorial in tutorial section moved back to LH of screen -- thanks @Brink etc.

I found it quite fast too in Hyper V on 6 year old laptop having 8GB RAM. Apart from the different eye candy, I'm mystified what if any advantage it has over Windows 10.

Hi there
definitely "Speedy Gonzales" compared to standard W10 at least on my system. Comparable to W2K19 Server which is no slouch. Just for that difference alone it's worth it. I'm now running it on an external W2GO external USB ->SATA SSD drive - so works on real hardware too.

As this is a release early build I'm sure there will be loads of changes. - Having the defualt Windows button in the middle of the screen IMO was just plain bonkers -- fortunately @Brink --thanks - there's a way to move it back to the left and change the menu back to W10 style.

I definitely would like to see some sensible changes to file explorer though. Icon changes are OK but hardly a "Mega thing" to chick a whole load of development resources at.

The other defect is that for some Office 2019 throws up nag warnings on license not valid even though it is. The get around shown in the W10 Forums works fine - just stop office updating until Ms sort out the activation license servers properly.

@CountMike
I wouldn't call missing "News / Interests" a defect. This was only a feature added to one of the Windows Insider builds so it can't be assumed that it is a "Standard Windows feature" although it's probably it will re-appear in an update.

Task manager seems fine on my system -- throw up Ctrl Alt L keys and choose task manager -- I'm not sure I ever had it on the task bar

In settings there are options to add things to task bar.

According to benchmarks, 15-20% slower than regular W10, about same as Insider Dev build.

Hi folks
@brummyfan
probably hardware dependent -- or on what you are running -- the only big app I have on Windows is Photoshop. Office stuff is not very intensive - unless doing "galactic Style" complex math calculations in EXCEL which would tax any CPU. Stock market trading things are usually done on the vendors trading platforms via their VPN's so Internet performance is more important than "RAW Speed". Level 1 real time stock data also requires fast Internet rather than the speed of the OS itself.

In fact once the system has booted up and as more and more applications become Cloud based the speed of the OS might become largely irrelevant. Network speed and graphics performance I think is where it's next at. I tried via a VPN watching the BBC showing a EURO football match in UHD on its iPlayer service. It was so slow that I gave up and went back to standard HD --and I'm on really fast gigabit Internet (and so is the VPN I was using - Nordvpn) -- probably BBC servers overloaded. !!!

Cheers

Yes jimbo, it's too early to point fingers at it because there are many drivers need to be updated ;)

Also I've noticed as not working (it may be just because this is a pre-release beta or whatever) ...but the Transparency setting does not work.
Screenshot:
Transparency.jpg

...and also for some reason, when you have multiple folders open, and/or programs, they don't line up on my taskbar anymore and instead they line up under the file explorer icon on the taskbar (perhaps that's just a setting I've missed)

..speaking of which, the setting to lock or unlock the taskbar is not there either or again I'm just missing it or it has moved.. I want to make those quicklaunch area icons there smaller. I'm sure (hoping) all these things will be there and working by time of a real release

Edit:
Later after I let it Windows Update, the Transparency resolved it self on its own, and I can't tell which item update did it.
However, the Transparency is not very see-through on the Taskbar like Windows 10 was, 11 is about half that - I prefer how it was on Win10.
fwiw, I suspect the GPU driver update did it however Win10 worked fine with what it had stock, and 11 before it updated said the same version for the driver. Anyway, whatever, this is a beta piece anyway - just playin with it for now

Hi @jimbo45
It's a bit slower in my laptop than Win 10 for some reason, I have done the in-place upgrade and not a clean install.
I initially installed it in HyperV. Then I created a Macrium image from there and restored it to an SSD. It boots up and works on one of my newer machine, but it has lag issues. This morning I clean installed it in my 10 year old PC (Legacy BIOS) in MBR disk. It is butter smooth. It's what I am using now responding to this post.

Don't like or doesn't exist:
No Task manager in Taskbar as well as other Taskbar entries, no News and interests either.

I'm pretty sure the rest of the Taskbar context menu items like Task Manager will be added later - current may just be for Dev testing the new Taskbar settings.
Also I've noticed as not working (it may be just because this is a pre-release beta or whatever) ...but the Transparency setting does not work.
Screenshot:

Transparency works fine my side.

PS Remember any display settings change requires the window or app to be closed and re-opened to take effect (properly)

I haven't really gotten into playing with it yet. I did find a bug when running ShowKeyPlus. It is very very faded and about the only thing I can read is my key.

Still trying to replicate this - very odd issue, this one.

Glad to hear that the clean install works well for you, I did the upgrade because this is only a leaked version and just wanted to see the changes they have made, I'll be reverting to Win 10 in a couple of days and wait for the official release with all the drivers.

I think he meant no right click on taskbar to get to task manager - which is how I usually launch it as well.

Also I've noticed as not working (it may be just because this is a pre-release beta or whatever) ...but the Transparency setting does not work.
Screenshot:

...and also for some reason, when you have multiple folders open, and/or programs, they don't line up on my taskbar anymore and instead they line up under the file explorer icon on the taskbar (perhaps that's just a setting I've missed)

..speaking of which, the setting to lock or unlock the taskbar is not there either or again I'm just missing it or it has moved..

Anyway, whatever, this is a beta piece anyway - just playin with it for now
It works on my laptop

The transparent thing issue was fixed with: Cumulative update for .NET framework 3.5 and 4.8 (KB5004034)
All looked pretty perfect after this update.
