A local repair service (NOT one authorized by Lenovo) destroyed my beloved Lenovo laptop. I salvaged the SSD and now would like to be able to transfer files from it to my new Lenovo laptop.

I have done my homework and think I need this:

But I am way out of my lane here, so I would appreciate it if someone could confirm this choice or perhaps suggest a better choice?

Thanks very much for any help anyone can offer. Bob

Hello Bob,
Sorry about your old system.
I think that should do it, I have something very similar that I use for backup purposes.

The enclosure you selected uses the Realtek RTL9210B chip. That is my preferred chip for such enclosures. They have never given me even the slightest problem. Seem to be rock solid.

I also use a Sabrent and have a 1TB NVMe M.2 drive in it, Samsung 970 EVO. It's much more pocketable than other offerings such as those that use a 2.5" drive, came with only a USB-C cable but I also have a USB-A to USB-C cable plus some small adapters.

I like the small NVMe enclosures because they are small enough to fit in my purse or pocket without taking up too much room. I can fit a 2.5 inch drive in there as well if I want to, but the little ones are much better.

The only thing I worry about is the heat dissipation in the enclosure. NVMe drives can run hot under prolonged writing and then they throttle, so I don't think I would use mine for backups without some form of cooling. I did load mine up with stuff all at once, but I slipped off the outer case for cooling while I did it. Now it's just mostly brief reads and writes, so I don't worry too much.

For your stated purpose perfectly OK.

I have the Sabrent one as listed in post #3 same chipset and specs.
You can easily change/mod the thermalpad if necessary.

Not keen on the "tube" type designs, too fiddly, prone to breaking even the ones for chunky 2.5"/3.5" HDDs.

I would vote the Sabrent as well. I have some of their equipment and it is very good quality. Never heard of SSK.

Sabrent are US based if that makes any difference to you.

If you hover your mouse pointer over the "Like" you will get access to the other options.

Then, simply move up to the other options. Hovering will give you a tooltip explaining what that item is, like this:

Just to add, mine is formatted NTFS and works fine with Windows and Linux. When I had a MacBook with OS X it could read NTFS but not write to it until an app was added, don't know about the newer macOS. Formatting as exFAT is more universal.
